Process for replacing bad HD

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I recently upgraded my Tivo, and with some help from the good folks using this forum, I discovered my new HD was bad. I received a replacement drive from the manufacturer (same model, same capacity).

Can I just BlessTiVo this new replacement HD and swap it for the defective one? If not, what is the proper replacement process? I have my original backup ready just in case I need it.

I greatly appreciate any help with this.

Thanks.

You have a couple of options. First check out Hinsdale's How To for a step by step on how to do everything.
1. you can do a dd copy from your original drive to your new drive. If you have bad sectors you could run into problems and it takes a long time.
2. You could do a backup/disk copy using mfstools using the option to keep your recordings. A better idea because it is faster and is more likely to miss bad sectors because it does not copy the entire drive only neccesary information.
3. Do an MFS Tools backup without keeping your recordings more likely to succeed bc it is copying much less info and so less likely to hit a bad sector.
4. Restore from your original backup almost positive to work but you lose recordings and settings.

Is this a single drive tivo?

Thanks, deebo.

I think I can follow your instrictions using Hinsdale's guide for the details. I appreciate your response.

To answer your question, I have a SAT-T60 that originally came with a single 40GB HD. I upgraded it to a 2 drive unit, keeping the original A-drive and adding a second 60GB B-drive, following Hinsdale's guide to the letter using Kazymyr's boot CD.

Does it matter which method I use?? I don't really care about keeping the recordings.

P.S. The failed drive is the new one that I added, not the original A-drive.

Thanks again.
