i have access to a hardware hard disk cloning tool. you hook up two ide drives, and hit 'clone', and it copies one to the other...

any chance i could hook up my stock tivo hdd, and a larger (known tivo-licious) hard drive in the box, clone it, and end up with one-step mega tivo?

No. Such copiers usually just "blindly" copy sector by sector, and perhaps some are "smart" enough to understand Windows partitions, but you can be that none of them will understand the TiVo disk. You'll be wasting your time even trying (though you will probably get a nice copy of your original drive, but it will be no larger than your source drive, and the "extra" space will not be usable in this configuration).
