DirecTiVo has jumpy live TV after upgrade

I just added a 60 gig Samsung HD to my 40 gig Hughes DirecTiVo GXCEB0T. It seems like when it is recording to the Samsung, it is just can't keep up with real time live TV, recording it or showing it. It might work for a short time but then it gets messed up. The picture will freeze for a few seconds and then cut back in, sometimes messing up the MPEG decompression. Shows recorded on the original hard drive play back fine, but live TV is bad.

It seems like it has to do with it saving to both hard drives at the same time that creates the problem. When I tell it to record 2 shows at the same time with the dual-tuner, the problem seems to clear up. I think the buffer is on the 40 and so it's writing to both drives at once, and when you start recording, the Samsung takes over because it is the only one with space on it.

The original Quantum 40 gig is set as Master, and the Samsung 60 gig is Slave. They are connected with a normal looking double IDE cord. The inside of the Tivo doesn't seem to get overly hot.

The original 40 was almost completely full when I added the Samsung. It probably had about 2 hours of free space, only. Do you think this could have anything to do with it? Or might it be a bad hard drive? Thanks!

Wow, I took the top off the TiVo to make sure that the jumpers were not set incorrectly like for non ATA or some weird thing. Those were correct, however the TiVo seems to have made a miraculous recovery. It now plays recordings correctly that skipped before. The Samsung was kind of hot to the touch. I'd estimate it was aproximately 130 degrees F. Actually, that is pretty damn hot, 54 C so if it really was that, then it's no wonder there were problems. With the top off, it seems to be working better. I'm gonna leave it off for a while and see if there is any difference. Obviously, I will have to replace the fan if this is the entire problem. I will keep you all posted in this thread. Thanks for reading it, anyway.
