From Bloomberg...

Why Microsoft Retreated From UltimateTV: Kathryn Harris

Estimated sales numbers from the article...

Echostar 400,000
TiVo 300,000
UltimateTV 100,000
ReplayTv 50-70,000

It's been this way for a while...

One good reason?

Dish will give you a pvr if you subscribe.

They have been doing this for awhile. (at least a year or two)

So Echostar = 400k units and DirecTV = 100k UTV + 300k DirecTivo, which according to my math adds up to 400k.

Folks, it looks like we have a tie. Based on what I've heard about the (current) Echostar platform, I'm glad I own 2 DirecTivos.

But Dish still wins because they have less subscribers than DirecTV for a few million I think.

But don't forget that Dish got a couple year head start on DirecTV with their Dish Player. So, it's understandable that they have more PVR users.

300,000 for Tivo includes both SA and DTivos. Based on earlier numbers of SA's I would say DTivo's are less than 100,000

With those kinds of numbers is understandable that retailers don't want to waste space on the shelves. If Dtivo's were only sold in CC and BB that represents about only 1 sold per store every two weeks for the last 16 months.

That dosn't take into account Sears, Ultimate, Goodguys, and Etailers. it was probably closer to One per Month per store.

This revolution has yet to catch on.

What is not revealing is the fact of multiple Dtivo homes. I own three and I know many here own multiple units, So penetration into the market is even less.

Can you really call them "sales" when they're free?

In that case Chevron is number one for "sales" of air and water for your tires and radiator.

Does that number take in to account how many dishplayers are being used as doorstops because the owner bought a DirecTivo?
