80GB Maxtor shows only 1.28GB

I was in the middle of my first Directivo (SAT-T60, single drive) upgrade when I ran into a problem with the new drive. I only have one open IDE port (primary slave, [hdb]) so I have to switch out the drives one at a time. I’m using Win98 in a PIII Dell.
Everything was going well until I tried to restore my newly created backup from my C: drive on to the new 80GB Maxtor. When I booted linux, it only found 1280MB (1.28GB) of space on the drive.
I then ran qunlock and changed my BIOS from [auto] to [none] and still no joy. I’ve checked the jumpers and they are set for slave on the Maxtor.
When I get home this evening, I’ll run the PowerMax utility and see what I can find out but for now, does anyone have any suggestions or should I return the drive and ask for an exchange? Any help would be greatly appricated.

Dan

Thanks for a great FAQ Hinsdale.

Well, it turns out that it WAS a 1.2GB drive with an 80GB cover bolted on. When I got home yesterday, I ran PowerMax and discovered that the drive had been switched in the box from the 80GB to a 1280MB drive made in 1996! (it was an open box "new" unit from Fry's in San Jose) So I returned it to Fry's and since they didn't have any unopened 80GB 5400's, I exchanged it for a brand new 120GB and paid the difference.
Got home, confirmed that it was in fact a 120GB drive and within the hour I had 143 hours available on the T60. Again, Thanks to all who go out of there way to share their knowledge with the rest of us, I could not have even dreamed of doing this myself without your help.

Very cool man! Well, I find it a bit strange that when I swapped the stock A for a 160GB Maxtor in my Hughes DTiVo I only had 122hrs...how's this work?

dmbong,

As far as I've read, TiVo can only use a maximum of 127GB per disk due to memory address limitations for now given the current hardware.

I do understand that...what I don't get is the lack of hours...or what the new algorithm is for calculating hours on a DTiVo...it seems to be different than an SA so far.

Maybe somebody in the know can make another size/hours chart for the DTiVos that could be added to the FAQ.

Brian,

Sorry, I did not actually say that the 120GB drive is in addition to the 40GB that came with the SAT-T60. So a total of 160GB of usable space, hence the 143 hours stated in the System Information Screen.

FYI - on Dtivo's there is only one recording "quality" so there is no option to change the quality which affects the capacity of the drives as on an SA.

I've had an 80GB drive show up as a 10GB drive before - in both the BIOS (HPT366 BIOS) and fdisk. Turned out it simply overflowed a counter and wrapped around (Windows saw it as a 74.5GB drive in the end). :).

Ok, gotcha...I suspected but wasn't sure.

No kidding? Argh! That makes me a little disturbed...had I known that I might not have picked one up. Damn!

ps - as I said similarly in another thread: WAIT a minute... How can this be true? Everything I've seen on these says 35 hours (stock), just like my SVR2000, and the SVR2000 only does that many in Basic. What's the real deal here?

dtivos are 40 gigs, so they can record up to 35 hours of digital quality recording. I'm guessing the SA have smaller drives since they can only do the same with lesser quality.

30-hour standalones have 30GB drives - though I've read that recently manufactured models come with 40GB drives.
