Upgrades and Software Versions

Ok...I'm getting ready to use the handy-dandy Maximum PC step-by-step instructions for upgrading my Sony 30 hour TiVo with a new 80 Gig drive. Then I came across something on the TiVoFaq about software version.

1) I've had my TiVo for over a year and have the latest 2.5 version of software. Does this affect upgrades at all?

2) Has anyone seen the Maximum PC article? Is it complete enough to trust?

Thanx!

I haven't seen the MaximumPC article, but I have read and used the Hinsdale instructions (see the first post in this forum) - that's all you really need...

Is it a hard copy? Is there anyway you can scan and send me the Maximum PC article?

hinsdale@newreleasesvideo.com

I like to see when one-timers write these articles and see what they say. Still am getting people who had problems or misinformation from the CNET TiVo upgrade article awhile back.

Yes it was a long while back.. but its online so people still drudge it up.. Cnets was a pretty basic upgrade guide (older info)... but has some misinformation about 5400RPM drives causing artifacting and recommending 7200RPM drives.

BTW- Someone was kind enought to scan this Maximum PC article and send it to me. The very short guide/article has the basics right.. few details are not really correct.. but overall accurate pretty simple blesstivo procedure for single drive units. Although it neglects one of the most important features of the upgrade completely - making a backup. And certainly doesnt take into account the variety of complications that may arrise from dual drives, different TiVo software versions, different PC configs, etc.

And that, hinsdale, is why we have you and all the other TiVo hackers :).
