If I want to upgrade a friends Dtivo?

Do I have to have the actual machine, or can I simply bless a new B drive for them, and then send it to them.
Of course, if anything were to happen, I would have to get their machine and could then load MY backup from A drive, but is this possible way to help a friend on another coast?
thanks

If the DTiVo is a single drive machine, then yes it is that simple.
What specific brand and model number DTiVo is it?

Sure you can just bless a disk and send it. There are a few web businesses that do just this.
As for using your backup on another machine, if it's 2.0 it will be simple. But if it's 2.5 you'll have to go through the BS of resetting the system to factory defaults. 2.5 keeps the serial # on the disk and won't work in another unit unless you do this. You may already know this, but it's worth repeating.

but if I want to backup a 2.5 Dtivo, so I can use it on the same machine. I don't have to reset anything? Should I delete thumbs and recordings first?
