A few days ago i purchased a SVR-2000 and when i opened up the case it had a 40GB drive in it. Instantly i was thinking, oh man 10GBs are being wasted. So anyone else in here have a SVR-2000 with a 40GB drive that came in their unit when they purchased it? Did any of you downgrade to 2.0.1 in order to use tivomad to make use of the 10 extra Gigs?

Even if you do, the first call will download 2.5.1, and the "extra" hours will be gone.

Are you sure there isnt another way to keep the space you gained using tivomad when the upgrade occurs? Looking at people's signatures on the forums, i found several people that have 80 and 160GB drives for their A drive. Do you think they are still will running 2.0.1?

2.5.1 and 40GB single drive seems to be a special combination TiVo used to reserve space for internal use (video clips, advertisements, etc.). Larger units already had the reserve space taken away during the 2.0.1 upgrade, but 40GB didn't kick in until 2.5.1.

On that last post I'm not exactly sure what you were trying to say. There is a difference between using the stock 40GB drive compared to using my own hardrive? Meaning if I used my own say, 80GB, when I receive the 2.5.1 update the whole 80GBs will stay?

Your 80 GB will probably be something like 72 hours or a bit less. With the 2.01 update for most and with 2.51 for sure, a "reserved" space on each Tivo was set aside for things like the Super Bowl Joe Montana stuff. You personally don't lose any hours for recording. I think the original SVR-2000's came with a 30 gig and a 15 gig drive. Now it appears they have just a 40 gig drive. Same space to you - up to 35 hours. The rest is reserved. No matter how large a HD you upgrade to, this same amount of reserved space gets set aside and you get the rest.
I hope that makes sense and I hope I got it right.

Having bough one of the original SVR2000s back in May 2000, I can assure you that they were single drive units with 30GB drives.

Musta been the DirecTivo that came with the 30 gig and 15 gig originally. Either way, the facts about the reserved space don't change.

c3, thanks for the post and bonscott87 for reminding me about the "reserved" space. Hmm if i stick with 2.0.1 am i missing anything that is in 2.5.1? I mean, what are the benefits in running 2.5.1 over 2.0.1?

If you're a subscriber, you cannot avoid 2.5.1. If not, there isn't that much difference. SVideo resolution was fixed in 2.0.2. 2.5.1 added VBR (which many people don't use) and is supposedly less nagging for non subscribers.

2.5 also has skip-to-tick in playback mode, which can be
helpful in getting part of the way through long recordings.

I have a HDR312 (running at 2.5.1), and just added an AT&Tivo (2.0.1). The thing I miss the most with the AT&Tivo is the skip-to-tick feature. I'll have to wait, impatiently, for 3.0 to allow me to use that feature on the new Tivo.
