Did your upgraded drive die? (POLL)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi. I realize this is completely unscientific so any actuaries out there...hush!

If you upgraded your Tivo with a new hard drive:

Is the new drive still chugging away or did you need to replace it because it eventually died? I want to compare the percentage of good/bad drives with a particular brand.

If you are unsure about your drive status please don't vote.
No "I think it's bads" or "I think it's goods" You are either confident it's working well or it died on you and you had to replace it. If there is some grey area where you think it's dying but you aren't sure yet then please don't respond.

I realize there are a few other brands you could have selected but you only get 6 choices for a poll so I picked what I think are the three most popular choices.

Please vote!

Since I can't vote twice, a small addendum to my vote...

I had TWO 80 GB Maxtor's die on me, not just one.

Gotcha beat, I've had THREE! 1 was DOA, 1 lasted about a month, and the last one lasted a week. I do have 1 in a TiVo that has been going strong for a couple months now.

I've given up on Maxtor, I'm giving Seagate a try.

Well I didn't want to skew the results with my opinion but I don't think too many people are interested in this poll so it's okay for me to say I think they should be called Crapstor drives. I just wanted to confirm my suspicion. Unfortunately, we don't have enough data.

My original drive died last August, so I upgraded it with a new Maxtor 100 GB drive, which died this week just 6 months later. I got the advanced replacement, and just stuck it back in there, so let's hope this one doesn't die too.

I put in an IBM 75GXP and it's still fine. Can one of the moderators edit the poll and add a few more choices like IBM, Samsung, Fujitsu, and Quantum (if someone has an old Quantum drive before Maxtor bought their drive business)?

My WD 60GB B drive died, and since I didnt do a backup. I was screwed.

I then tried a dd copy and screwed the copy process, and copied a blank hard drive to my failed 60gb. Then I was really screwed.

Nonetheless, my DTV is in route to hinsdale for reimage & repair.

Some of the newer Maxtors are actually Quantum drives that were relabeled, when Maxtor bought Quantum. Quantum drives were never known for their reliability. I personally have 4 Maxtor drives and while my very first one did fail(a 1gig drive :P) they replaced it. This was 5 yrs ago. Since then I have gotten a 6gig, 27gig, and now the 80gig. All are still working great, including the replacement drive they sent me 5 yrs ago(I have 2 computers set up).

I really can't complain. I also have 1 WD drive which has been working nicely for about a yr.

Dead? hmmm, probably would work in a PC...I installed it in TiVo with new 30GB Quantum A drive and within two weeks had stutters...Removed, ran diagnostics, copied original A drive to a backup drive, reinstalled 80GB as B drive using original TiVo A drive and got stutters again. Removed, put backup A drive in using original TiVo A drive as B drive. No problems.

Of course before doing anything made MFS Tools backup of single drive image :)

I must have gotten a bum Maxtor!
