Compusa Hard Drives

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: textivo

From my understanding, Compusa will have their brand of 80 gig hard drives on sale this coming Sunday for $100 ea. These are Maxtor 5400rpm drives.

Posted by: tivoboy

that would be an awesome deal.

Posted by: TWalters

Any idea if these are the actual Maxtor drives, or the Quantum clones?? Does it really make any difference??

Thanks,
Tom

Posted by: stevel

Not that it matters, but I think they are Maxtor D540X models.

They talked about the drives here under next weeks sales.

Just checking in to see if these drives really did go on sale???
Does the sale start Saturday or Sunday?

Posted by: bsnelson

I believe it's Sunday - The current ad runs through (and including) today (Saturday).

Man, I can't wait. Since I'm running a little short on cash at the moment, I'm going to have to limit myself to 4 of them at that price! :D

Posted by: rlowe

Not today. I went by there and they were $149. Maybe it starts tomorrow.

Lowe.

I bought one of these drives tonight and plan to price adjust tomorrow if the sale turns out to be true. Today the price rang up as $139.99. My box came with the Quantum version of the Maxtor D540X [Maxtor P/N 4K080H4] as described at:
http://www.maxtor.com/products/Diam...Specs/42089.htm).

What's the warranty on these harddrives? 3 years or 1 year?

Posted by: corfam

These drives are warranted for 3 years... not the 1 year as are most Compusa drives.

Posted by: MidgetBorderCollie

I get the Sunday ad supplement to the Washington Post on Saturday. The COmpUSA drive is on the front pagefor 99.99. (139.99 - 40 instant savings). A pretty good deal.

Posted by: TechDreamer

The ad is now online.

Posted by: tivoboy

Is that the 40 people are talking about?

Posted by: TivoHunter

Yea, I see the drive in my Sunday suppliment also (Indianapolis, IN)... I guess I'd better head up there around opening time (11am). I didn't see any of these drives sitting out when I was there yesterday. I spoke with one of the salesman and asked him if he new what was going to be on sale on Sunday, he said NO. Hmmm, Isn't the web great!

Posted by: Darin

Got mine this AM! My CompUSA opens at 11, got there at 11:15, plenty left.

Posted by: cutter_otjr

I just returned home with one of the drives advertised for $99.99 in the flyer that TechDreamer had the linked too in a previous post.

I arrived at a Metro Detroit CompUSA at 12:05 and walked up to the counter and asked the guy there for one. He handed me one from the cabinet and it looks like there were quite a few left. Note that mine had a price tag of $169.99 but rung up at the cash register for the $99.99 price.

Specs on the drive are:
80.0 GB AT Maxtor D540X-4K
Maxtor P/N: MX4K080H4

Posted by: TivoHunter

Super, I picked up two of them this morning... I was sitting in the CompUSA parking lot at 10:50, along with about 20 other cars... bought two of the $99 specials and was outta there.
I've got one installed in my girlfriends 14hr Tivo. It now reads 106hrs, 43 mins at Basic quality!!!!
This being my 2nd upgrade went a little faster although I did screw up and not give the backup of the original drive a different name, so I'm sure it overwrote my original backup of my A drive.

This drive is sooo much quieter then the 80 gig Seagate I installed in my unit a couple of weeks ago. Has me thinking about installing the 2nd Maxtor in MY unit... too lazy, I probably won't.

Got one and put in my DSR2k, replacing the B drive (which is now in my computer).

Posted by: bsnelson

Has anyone run POWERMAX on these drives yet? I bought one and it fails both the short and long SMART tests, but if I recall, if these are "Quaxtors", the Powermax utility might not work.

Or should I exchange it tomorrow? :)

Brad

Never mind. I am a dummy!

I yanked the jumper to make it a slave drive, but my CDROM on the secondary bus was slave also. Curiously, the CDROM appeared to "become" primary, so things looked normal, but when I tried to boot the Dylan disk (planning to do a dd of /dev/zero to the drive as another test), it showed "lost interrupts" on the drive.

It was at that point that the light bulb illuminated. I put the jumper back on, which made it cable select (the factory position); rebooted, and this time the Maxtor was primary and the CDROM secondary. The Powermax short test was good, and the long test is running now.

Now, if CompUSA would only run a deal on 120GB drives for, say, $150... :)

First time I've done the TiVo upgrade and almost managed to give myself a heart attack - next time I'll pay more attention to what I'm doing! I bought two of the CompUSA drives, with the intent of using one of them to replace my A drive in my Philips HDR-31202.

Got home, yanked the hard drive out of the Tivo, put in the 80GB, and DUH ran the MAD utility on my ORIGINAL drive by accident and I freaked out as soon as I realized what I did!!!

I put the original drive back into the TiVo to see if I screwed it up, and it came up with a system error that said that it needed to dial in and reboot and if it didn't come back up that I needed to call customer support. FORTUNATELY, it did come back up, and (rolling up my sleeves) decided to try again and this time got it to work. Egad...

Many thanks to everyone on this forum for all of the ireadily available help/info that gets posted. I now have one new 80GB A drive (the old one is shelved for backup) with 88hrs (basic), 52hrs (medium). I figure this should tide me over until the 160GB drives come down in price, and I've DEFINITELY learned my lesson!
:D

Thanks to whoever posted this here because these
drives were not in the CompUSA Sunday flyer. My
CompUSA had about 30 of them on a display, but they did not appear in the flyer that came in the
paper. I went to the store anyway and there they
were.

Nice heads up!

Mike

I just picked up 2 myself, glad I was reading in here last night, I totally missed it in the CompUSA add. It was right on the front page! Anyways, I grabbed 2 and the guy walking me up to the register asked if I wanted a service plan for $10 each, he said 3 year replacement warranty etc etc. I asked him what the normal warranty is on the drive, he said 1 year. If you look at the front of the box it clearly states 3 year warranty. I said no thanks :) So beware if they try to get you on the service plan.

Anyway, plan to do my first Hughes DirecTivo upgrade tonight!!

Are you sure it wasn't in your flyer? In the flyer I saw it was on the front page, not with the rest of the Hard Drives, and it was hidden underneath a little extra half-size page that was adverstising weekend only items.

I have to admit, I never would have seen it had I not seen the posting here . . . so your point is very well taken! It was a very good heads up. Thanks to Textivo for starting the thread.

On the other hand, the small and odd placement in the flyer is probably the reason I was still able to pick one up at 4:00 in the afternoon.

Also, unlike Best Buy, they seemed to have plenty in the store, not 5 or 6. I hate when Best Buy does that. It's so degrading to wait in the parking lot for 20 minutes and then stampede like mothers chasing tickle-me-elmos at Christmas to get the advertised product at the advertised price.

Posted by: where1

Just picked up 2 of these myself. The salesman only wanted to sell me one, but I convinced him to sell me 2. Maybe I'll start upgrade of my 20 hr unit tomorrow.

Another nice thing is that the ATA/66 cable included with these does not have any of the pins blocked. The length isn't great (standard 18"), but you can make it fit easily enough. And in the interim until i get a real bracket, the foam was cannibalized to make a firm mounting surface. then i broke out the zip ties. :)

The latest version of PowerMax (3.0.3) works on Quantum drives. I ran it on an original HDR112 drive.

(Though on my POS PC with 3.0.3 the screen is blank in where the menus go and you have to guess how to get it to pick which drive to run on - hint:make it the only drive hooked up)

These drives are perfect for Tivo/Directivo upgrades. They are 80gig and just 5400rpms, which keeps the noise and heat down. And best of all, at only $99, they are a steal.

I grabbed one yesterday and upgraded my Directivo in(excluding the waiting for the backup to finish time) about 10 minutes.

About the only thing that went wrong was me. I forgot to reconnect the fan. Luckily I remembered about 20 minutes after restarting it. So I had to reopen it and reconnect the fan.

The 106 hrs should now hold me for a bit.

This will make some friends REALLY happy when I give them as upgrade gifts.

Great Valentines day gift for my mom and dad,
Great thank you for some fiends of mine,
and ANOTHER 80 GB for my sat-60

now, I almost wish I HAD purchased the lifetime subscription.

The deal is available online now (don't know if anybody mentioned it yet) -- think it expires today?

According to the flyer, it lasts all this week.

Thanks for the post and the info. I just ordered one of these and will upgrade my DTivo (Hughes) next week.

I'll post how the upgrade went after I'm done.

Picked up 2 today. They had dozens of the drives and there was no limit.

Great Deal!

Posted by: dsmith48

I am such a sucker for a deal as such, I truthfully do not need this drive. I simply wanted one, because it was a good deal! So I bought one...

I currently have a 40GB drive less then a year old in my PC less then half used.

Any ideas on what I can/should do with this 80GB drive...

I have no need to further upgrade TiVo, nor do I wish to give it away. :D

I know about the temptation. However, by the time you can use it, $99 will probably be the regular price.
