Upgrade under Windows XP help

I read Hinsdale's upgrade summary and it states, at the bottom, not to boot under XP with the original TIVO drive. If I can find a backup image for my unit ,can I simply put my new larger B drive into the computer and let it boot under XP, bless the drive and then add to TIVO. It sounded like as long as the original TIVO drive isn't booted under XP, all is ok.

Now, if I can boot with the new B drive under XP and bless it, where do I find a backup for a Hughes DirectTIVO? If I need to restore the backup to my original A drive, I will have to figure something out in the future (partition, etc.), but I don't want to do that if I don't have to.

Thanks

I think you're misunderstanding things on a pretty fundamental level here:

At no point in the upgrade process should you be (nor do you need to be) booting Windows. You should be booting Linux using either the bootable CD or the floppy. It doesn't matter if you have XP installed on your computer as long as you don't start XP.

Try using the boot CD or floppy without any TiVo drives installed; you should see the difference pretty quickly. Once you know what to expect and what commands you need to issue, it's a very simple process.

(The reason you're not supposed to boot XP while the original drive is attached is that XP will effectively destroy the TiVo software.)

I hope that helps clarify things for you.

And to add a little, make sure you have a FAT partition for the backup to be written into. If it's to be on your XP drive make sure you've created a FAT partition before you start or you already are using FAT, not NTFS.

So, as long as I boot using the linux boot CD I should be fine?

I have partition magic 7.0, so I can create a FAT32 partition to store the backup image.

Why can't the backup image reside on NTFS? Is it because linux doesn't recognize NTFS?

Thanks

1. Yes, as long as you boot from the CD you are fine.

2. Yes, Partition Magic will work fine.

3. Because Linux(or at least this boot cd) cannot understand and write to the NTFS file structure.
