Best way to add 80GB Maxtor?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just got a 80GB maxtor drive. I want to put it in my Tivo, but I understand it's also best to have a backup of the original drive (in my case 14GB Quantum).
So... what's the best way to proceed? Backup my A drive to the new Maxtor, then remove the A drive and make the Maxtor the new A drive? (resulting in 80GB storage space total, and keeping the old drive as the backup).
Once I copy the 14GB A drive image to the Maxtor, how to I get the Tivo to use the rest of the drive as well?
Do I really need to keep a backup, or can I combine the space of both drives for a total of 94 GB?
Thanks for you help, in advance.

You will go far by reading the Hinsdale-how-to linked in the top post of this section of the forum. Answering your questions:
All using the bootdisc:
You backup to your computer's HD and then can either keep it there or burn to CD.
I would then recommend that you use both drives, after verifying that your backup work (also in the how-to).
Essentially, you are using the original A drive and adding the 80Gb drive via the TivoMad utility on the bootdisc, which gets the Tivo to recognize the B drive's extra capacity.
Please. Print out the how-to and read through it a couple of times before you start. If it doesn't answer all your questions, just search this forum. If that doesn't do it, post your question.
Good luck from a longtime lurker who just did his first Tivo upgrade this weekend.

I performed my 1st upgrade last week with a Maxtor 80gb drive using the methods described on the "Hinsdale-How-To" web page. My 20hr unit is now a 88hr unit.
Personally, I recommend making your 80gb HD your main "A" drive and keeping your original 14hr HD as a backup. I have this setup because I plan on upgrading in the future to a larger HD - probably to 100gb or 120gb. Upgrading a single drive is less of a hassle, IMHO, than a 2-HD setup.

After you have upgraded once, 1 or 2 drives, your next upgrade will have to start from the beginning.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I decided to keep my old drive as a backup and just use the 80Gig drive. Everything went very smoothly thanks to Hinsdale's web page. It only took me about an hour to do the upgrade. I now have a 91 hour Tivo!
This hacking stuff is fun.
