Strange download

After tonight's download, my status was "Pending restart," which struck me as odd, since I wasn't expecting new software. I restarted it, and found no new software [same version number], no new message; it's as if nothing happened.
So--what happened? Any ideas?

Had a 7MB download today, which I thought was odd seeing as how my last update was yesterday. Originally I figured it was some movies/commercials for TiVo Showcase. But I checked my status after DL and sure enough Tivo was "Pending Restart". I also wasn't expecting a software update and I was worried that some of the scripts I installed (for update via PPP Serial -- I have a dead modem) would be wiped away after restart...but they weren't.
Wonder what this was...Maybe the gurus over in the Underground have a clue?

Check system status and see what your version is.

When I rebooted TiVo, I got the "TiVo is installing a software update. This may take a few minutes" message." But I looked at the sys version after restart and it was: 2.5.1-01-000 (on an SA TiVo) -- same as before the "update".
Weird, huh?

i checked the logs on my SA tivo (running 2.5) and it says it downloaded 2.0.1-001-000 and will be installed at 02:00.

Something very similar happened to me with one very disturbing difference. After last night's download, my status was "Pending restart." When I rebooted it claimed that it was installing new software as well though I didn't see any difference...
Now the disturbing part. My cable guide info had been down to 4 days. After the download it still said 4 days. I then made another daily call which apparently succeeded. At least it said my cable guide data was now good until March 4th (or so). However, when I check out my To Do List it still only goes out 4 days (3 now). I tried yet another call with the same effect... a successful call but no actual guide update. It is acting as if it did not index (which it didn't after my repeated daily calls, though so little time had passed this doesn't altogether surprise me). I've tried several reboots with no effect.
I'm on the verge of trying a Guided Setup but thought that I'd see if any one else was seeing this.
Thanks...

Eric, can you update us as to whether or not your SA TiVo reverted back to 2.0.1! I hope that's not the case for you or any of us!

RHB66, I'd wait at least another 24 hours to see if it'll index the download. I've found that indexing sometimes takes longer than normal...Good luck and let us know what you find!
I'll check tonight after work to see if I have similar symptoms to any/all of you. A call to TiVo tech support may not be far off!

12 hours after I got the update, and three soft re-boots, I finally pulled the plug.
Twenty minutes later the missing schedule data appeared.
Still have no idea just what this update was about.
Happiness :D

Well, I went to Now Playing a couple days ago and thought, "that's odd, there's network logos in the Now Playing list, I don't remember those being there before." Maybe I'm just completely oblivious and they were there before, but that's how I noticed.

it restarted at 2am but it's still running 2.5.1-01-1-000 like it was before, and the serial ppp hack is still working

I don't think the stealth update was about icons. I had plenty of them before and didn't notice any new ones after.

Could they be pushing the 4-digit Dish channel fix to everyone now?
Posted by: hfwarner3
I wonder if this is not the first step of many to get all the hardware back to the same version with some of the bug fixes? It would be nice to have VBR on my AT&T!

That was my thought too. But no-ones mentioning a little "a" in their version numbers.

Maybe the letter is being dropped because it's no longer a beta release.

I don't think TiVo is that sloppy. Any developer knows you change the code, you change the version. You've got to be able to determine which version of the code someone's running.

They have said they can update particular modules without needing to download a whole copy of the software. Perhaps it's just a module upgrade. A restart may still be required to activate the new module.
Has anyone checked to see if their startup parameters had switched to the other root partition?

Well it seems that my TiVo universe has righted itself. As I reported earlier this morning after the phantom upgrade of last night and several restarts and downloads I was still seeing only 3 days of the guide after each "successful" download. However, sometime between 9am EST and 3pm EST the system finally decided to index itself and after a quick look everything appears to have returned to normal.
BTW, the version shown now is 2.5.1-01-010, the same as before (I think... I have to admit that I never paid much attention after the first 3 version digits).
Thanks RuffRyder for advising me to wait for awhile before running the Guide Setup again. My system has ALWAYS indexed right after the download so this business of the "pending restart" and the guide not updating was somewhat disconcerting.
Thanks again,
Robert

download 2.0.1 to downgrade my 2.5.1 system.
Pending restart....
Restarted it, it said, loading new software, still, nothing was done, because my tivonet stuff worked after the 'upgrade'
I noticed tclient hung though after setting status 'Pending restart', rebooted, made call, hung again, rebooted, problem went away.
I wonder what is causing this?

Yeah, I'm still on hda7 -- same as before the "software update". HTH, good hypothesis re: Dish's 4-digits, btw. I'm inclined to think that's it but I'm more hopeful it's a patch for the sound drop/video bug other people are having. :D (See this thread for more into on that).
Robert, glad to help

I think TiVo is punishing you SA people for all the RB bashing in the DTiVo thread on bad Phillips remotes (RB really has lost his mind you know. He is quite mad. Next thing you know he will be begging the King of the Potato People to send good remotes to everyone without their having to call).

I also got a phantom upgrade on my Philips combo box. Something funky is going on with TiVo and DirecTV. Perhaps it's related to their recent system upgrades?
Trouble in DTiVo land as well...

My SA is displaying brief channel info when changing channels in the top right of the screen now. I do not remember that before.

I've always had that, though in my case it's a bar across the top of the screen (because that's what I have it set for).
Same thing coming out of menus, IIRC.

For a brief period of time due to a database mismatch we downloaded 2.0.1 to a few customers who were already running post-2.0.1. The box is hardcoded to never downgrade, so after the 2am reboot, the box reverted to whatever software it was previously running (there are two software partitions). The mismatch period of time was brief, so only a small number of customers were affected. It has nothing to do with 4-digit channels, stealth upgrades or downgrades, or anything malicious or underhanded. We apologize for any inconvenience to those customers who were affected, since they didn't get a PGD download for that call (but of course loaded any missing PGD on their next call).

Hey, at least you bumped it back up to the top of the page for others to read :D

Thank you so very much for responding. As both my tivos did this and I thought I was nuts.

Thank you Mr. Mack,
Can you please weigh in on why each and every DirecTiVo reset at 8:30pm Thursday night, losing 3 1/2 hours of the Olympics? Thanks.
Even if you have to pass the buck to DirecTV, would just like to have some idea.
Posted by: TiVoOpsMgr
I hate to pass the buck to DIRECTV, but our investigation so far is pointing to an APG reset.

Sorry, but what is APG?
Posted by: Knative
Advanced Program Guide, IIRC. Mentioned somewhere on the System Information screen.
aka the on screen guide you access through live tv.

I don't have DirecTV so maybe this is a stupid question, but why would you lose 3 1/2 hours because of a reset? If my standalone reboots during a recording for some reason it immediately starts recording when it comes back up. I end up with two programs in Now Playing, one being the pre-reboot portion the other the post. The only time missing is the actual time it takes to reboot.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the way it worked last thursday. At 7:30pm every Dtivo in the country (we believe) stopped recording whatever it was on, lost signal for 3 minutes, and did not resume recording after the signal came back. The cause is as yet unknown.
But normally, you're right. any problem, reboot, loss of signal, etc, and the unit will pick up as soon as it can.

I hate to pass it right back to TiVo, but if that's something that can be expected to happen, software should be designed to handle it. It certainly shouldn't stop an in progress recording just because the guide data went away for that program.
