Best deal on a medium-sized hard drive?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm looking to upgrade 2 of my TiVo's. I would like to get 2 medium sized drives... something in the 30-40 GB range. Where can I find the best deal possible for this sized drive? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks :)

Things is, the 80 gig drive normally lists at $150 (usually online for $125), and smaller drives (when you can find them) are rarely significantly less than $100.

I'm a little disappointed with CompUSA. Could you actually buy those 80GB drives in your city? I went to the WI store at 11:30 AM Sunday and found an empty shelf. The clerk claimed that they had Qty 20 and were not giving rain checks. They had WD for a higher price, but this really sounds like a bait-and-switch: sold out less than 30 minutes and no rain checks?
I understand pricewatch keeps things very competitive, so that sounds like a good choice.
As for the real thread, you might be better suited to pay for the 80GB drive now rather than upgrade with a small drive and potentially want more space later. IMHO 40 GB is small and the cost runs almost close to the 80 GB drive.

Sounds like a poorly run Compusa. Most stores seemed to have ALOT of them. Did you try looking up their inventory on the compusa website. Also, you can check for other stores, that may be within your reach, that have them in stock.

Ditto on the poorly run. The one I went to (one of the 2 in Manhattan) had them all back in the service room, you had to go to the business sales desk to buy them.
And pricewatch is OK, but it's a lot worse for bait and switch than CompUSA. I like pricegrabber better; they also have a better search interface.

When I finally made it over yesterday, they were out. The shelf space was very small too. There were tons of other drives, and several aisle caps with other 'specials'.
The one sales person I talked to said there were more comming, and to call back today. We'll see.

On Tuesday, I bought 1 and there were 4 more left. Today, I checked the same store and they were sold out. I had to go to two other stores before I found 2 more drives, this time the salesperson had to bring it down from the top of the shelf. This store still had 5 to 6 units left.

I went to the store in Culver City (in So Cal) and they were sold out for the week. It was a bait and switch, but I didn't buy a hard drive just some other things while I was there. When will I learn?

That's a bad use of the term bait-and-switch. If they had the item and sold out of it, it's not bait and switch. If they never had the item or neer at that price, then it's bait and switch.

SKU is 290124_. In Denver 3 of 5 stores still report stock. The national web site shows out of stock.
Our store shelf was empty at 2pm on Sunday, but I picked two off of the very top overstock shelf. Then I walked past a rolling rack with lots of them.

I bought a 20GB Maxtor drive at Best Buy for $70 and then got a $15 gift card right before Christmas. So check the local Sunday ads.
Newegg.com typicallys has reasonable prices.
