Philips HDR312 @ Drives Upgrade ?'s

Hello, wondering if someone might take the time to help me out. I have a two drive Philips HDR312 and I would like like to upgrade the unit. I purchased an 80 GB 5400 RPM HD Maxtor to add, however having read through months worth of posts I'm a bit confused with what my options are.
#1 Can I add the 80 GB HD and remove the (1) HD from the unit, or should I remove both drives - replace them with the 80 GB - and will the new TivoMad application utilize the added capacity?
#2 If I'm utilizing exisiting drive bays there would be no need to purchase a HD mounting kit or IDE connector (advertised on 9th Tee for the Upgrades), correct?
#3 Anyone have specific advice on upgrading a two drive model that may be helpful before I get started?
Thanks!
Jason

I've recently done essentially the same update you're describing. I found that by following Hinsdale's excellent guide, I had no troubles getting my update completed.
In my case, my HDR312 also had 2 drives in it, and they were a married pair rather than a factory merged pair. So, I followed the instructions for divorcing them and creating a backup image of the A drive. I then restored the A drive image onto a Maxtor 120Gb drive, did the TivoMad, and installed it back into my Tivo.
I did shortcut the process in a minor way, in that I did the TivoMad without re-installing the drive into the Tivo to test the image. I figured that if it didn't work correctly, I'd just go back to square one and follow EVERY step in the guide. But, as it turned out, the new drive worked on the first shot and I had 145 hours at basic quality!
When in doubt, follow Hinsdale's guide to the letter, and you should have no problems - except for finding the time to watch all the shows that Tivo will be recording for you!

agreed. Follow the guide to the letter. It works.. although I only had a one drive system, I did install a second drive, and watched it fail after a few weeks, so the same rules apply:
(briefly)
back up the two drives in your computer using mfstools and the option to combine drives. You WILL lose all recordings, although they will show up in "Now Showing". You just have to delete them from there... then follow everything else. Really simple.
