i thought i recovered from the GSOD problem i described in this thread but the last 5 programs i recorded now show up as having errors and cannot be played back. I'm trying to figure out if the factory A drive is busted or is it a bad B drive i put in. Is there any easy way to verify this?

One thing you might try is enabling backdoors, and look through the logs (particularly /var/log/messages). If you see anything similar to "lost interrupt", "seek error" or similar, it might suggest one drive over the other.

Best would be to pull them and run diags on both.

thanks for the tips bsnelson, i did enable backdoors last night, and looked at the logs, there were a ton of "write cache failed" etc etc... but nothing about lost interrupt or seek error...

does "write cache failed" indicate a disk error? the error in the log didn't specify which drive (i guess tivo looks at both in the same contiguous space)... the tivo hasn't locked up since i enabled back doors, and a reboot actually allowed me to watch the programs that showed up as "error" the last time again... this is wierd... i wonder when it'll die on me again.

also... anyone has quantum diagnostics utilities? the A drive is a quantum, and powermax doesn't like it. :P

Which powermax? I got 3.03 from their web site and it ran find on an original 15GB drive from a HDR112 I was testing.

2.5 comes on the floppy packaged with Maxtor drives of late.
