I am trying to copy the old A drive to the new A drive. Nothing is happening other than a flashing cursor. I do not hear the Hard Drives working. Is this working or am I doing something wrong?

It's unlikely you'll hear anything. Look on the drives' circuit boards - there is usually a small green LED that will flash during disk activity. With dd, you'll typically see one disk flash for a second or so, then the other. The blinking cursor is normal - there is no feedback during the dd copy.
