Tivo2 or ReplayTV

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm shopping for a PVR.

I have a friend with at Tivo1. His primary complaint is about the phone dialing out at lame hours.

I'm considering the Tivo2 or the ReplayTV 4000.
I have broadband access. (Roadrunner)

Why should I get a Tivo2?
1. It's a little cheaper. (by the time you add ethernet, lifetime support, etc)
2. Tivo has this cool forum, and appears to have better user/hack support than the ReplayTV.
3. I can 'upgrade' the disk space.
4. It's much harder to get REAL information from the Tivo web site about their product. What the heck is
TivoWeb and TivoNet?
5. Am I wrong? Are broadband program updates currently available for the Tivo2?

However:
1. The ReplayTV already currently has the broadband access for program updates.
2. I can 'upgrade' the disk space with a ReplayTV just as I can a Tivo.
3. The ReplayTV web site is much clearer about the units capabilities.
4. What can the Tivo2 do that the Replay can't already do?
(now or with software upgrades)

Note. I'm not trolling here. I like to be a VERY informed buyer, but after days of reading these forums and web pages, I'm still unclear of what these systems are currently capable of.
I like hacking and tweaking, so getting my hands dirty isn't a concern.
(I have no dish, but may be adding HDTV cable connection)

Thanks for the info!
Kent

TiVoNet and TiVoWeb are not official TiVo products. Check out the Underground section of this forum for more information.

Check out Dr. Strange's comparisons (look for his posts, or check here) if you want information about the software differences (which IMO are probably more important than the hardware).

Most of my comparison applies to the 4K, but not all of it. I'll have to clean this up later and put a useful link to it in my comparison but here are the differences I know of between the 3K and 4K.

I'm a owner of a series 1 - 30hr (unhacked) Phillips standalone HDR312.

Get a series 2 TiVo. If you don't want to hack and want a good amount of space for the dollar, then get the new 60 hr directly from TiVo.com or hopefully Best Buy within 1-2 months.

As noted, read Dr. Strange's comparison of the two products.

You won't be disappointed with either a TiVo or Replay, but it's my opinion (based on my usage, and my best friend's usage of his Replay) that the TiVo software and management/usage of the program guide data/conflicts is by far superior.

Broadband capability for "ethernet" data/program guide downloads will be possible on the Series 2 (without hacking and modification (other than maybe turning on a backdoor with a series of remote key presses) before the Summer. More capabilities will be available by the end of the year.

I've been using the dial-up method since Oct 2000, it's never bothered me, but I would difinitely use the broadband method if given the choice (the geek in me comes out).

Good luck...
