New TiVo Oscar Showcase is here!

Got it on my daily call last night. The clips for it will be recorded in Teleworld Paid Programming this weekend. You can, however, read the nominees for the two "TiVo awards" (Best Picture and Best Performer), and go ahead and vote, even without the clips. Voting is done with your remote and is quite simple -- just select the thing you want to vote and press select. An onscreen message comes up telling you your vote has been counted and that up to 4 members of your household can vote (only the last 4 votes in each category will be counted).
Also, there is a disclaimer that clips and voting may not be available to everyone. Clips is pretty obvious (If your cable system overlays ads on top of the Discovery channel paid programming), but I don't know why some people wouldn't be able to vote. I'd imagine the people that can't vote are people who have opted-out of data collection, because voting causes a line to be added to your tivoLog.prv file (the one that logs keypresses) with your vote--and if you've opted out, I believe that that file doesn't get sent.
Anyway, I certainly hope TiVo does more stuff like this in the future - it seems quite slick (and was fun too!) :)

Apart from the good reason you mentioned, there's also units that aren't making their daily calls on a regular basis and units without service being unable to access Showcases.

Why do I not see the Oscar Showcase? I have a the new 60 Hour Series2 TiVo and my TiVo did make a daily call today. But I dont see any Oscar showcase.
Any ideas?
Posted by: rasheed
Interestingly, I think TiVo2 might still be a version behind to get this new stuff....
Anyway, if you get DSC/DSCP, I would wait until tomorrow evening before trying -- I think TiVo flipped the showcase on too early, but I don't know.

No video clips after last night's middle of the night recording of the Discovery Channel...I was up, so I saw that it was capturing it correctly. When do the trailers appear?
Posted by: TIVO_GUY_HERE
I was up at 4:30 this AM getting ready for work, and saw the TELE-WORLD being recorded. But I have NEVER seen clips on this TIVO so I wont get my hopes up.
Posted by: gleffler
My TiVo, for some reason, thinks I have a season pass to Teleworld Paid Programming. IIRC, if you record it, it won't get used for clips. :( I know I don't have any clips, but I do have the TPP in my Now Playing--and the two blocks of it are both the "Do not adjust your television" screen. TPP is on again tonight (tomorrow AM @ 4:30)--I cancelled my SP for it, so we'll see if it works tomorrow.

Okay, I have the Oscar entry in the showcase -- I can see the program data for the Oscar broadcast and related programs. I can see the nominees and vote. But where are the trailers?
I went into backdoors and looked at the Teleworld Paid Programming clips on the disk -- there are three entries. Two are the 'test pattern' all the way through, but the third has a snippet of some other program at the end.
If Discovery starts running some other program too early, does that mean I won't get any of the trailers? :(

My Tivo looks like it's going to pickup 15 minutes of Teleworld on Monday morning (3/18). That may be the clips since the e-mail said something about appearing 3/18. Oddly, it's showing twice in a row and the recorder is getting the second showwing.

dkroboth,
My TiVo is planning to record Teleworld in exactly the same manner as yours. I hope they're right!
Posted by: John494900
No trailers for me either, and my TiVo also recorded them.
Maybe they won't be used til later. Hopefully.
Posted by: murgatroyd
I was wondering about the clips/no clips problem. Is it mostly a matter of whether one's cable system lets the TiVo programming through (vs. airing some other advertising) or is this a bandwidth problem?
Do the DTiVos get all the clips and the standalones not, or is it random?
Jan
Posted by: jamesbobo
What is the possibility that TiVo can have these clips available for download on its websight? Discovery is switched to TV Asia during its paid programming hours so the clips are unavailable to my TiVo.
Posted by: Graymalkin
My Series 1 has this in its Showcase. But it won't let me vote and there are no clips recorded or on my "To Do" list. This is a 14-hour SA that's been upgraded to 162 hours.
Nothing at all on my Series 2.

Anybody else think gleffler's on the TiVo payroll?
Anyway, I got my votes in. Moulin Rouge is awesome.

yeah, anyone who goes out of their way to record such
a thing is twisted I think ..
I've never liked the oscars or emmys, they virtually always
give awards to movies I hate, and themovies I like don't
get anything.
that said I haven't gone to a theater in over 2 years!

Well, earlier this evening, I noticed that the star and the Oscar Showcase disappeared from the main menu. And the 4:17 a.m. Teleworld recording is gone too. Does that mean I don't have to watch the Oscars?
Posted by: MighTiVo
Check again after Mon Morning Teleworld.
Posted by: ursine1
The star item has dissapeared... and I never received the trailers. Hmmmm.
-- Paul Goormastic
Posted by: dkroboth
After looking at the teleworld broadcast, it appears the first 15 minutes were probably a rebroadcast of the the Tivo Broadcast Test Pattern stuff and the second 15 minutes (which got recorded) were a TiVo ad (guy with wife expecting baby), Frances Ford Coppola interview, Ronnie Lott and Joe Montana talking about series II, and then some more series II stuff. Still didn't see any trailers. The Oscar star as also disappeared from my Tivo Central.
Did anyone not vote and have the star disappear?

This stinks. I didn't get any star, or anything.
I decided to tape Teleworld to see what it was, and Comcast has put their own programming over it!
Grrr...

As I had originally written, the star disappeared from the main menu AND the Teleworld recording disappeared as well. Nothing was recorded earlier this morning. Only the new TiVo showcase remains but nothing on the menu as before.

My TiVo recorded something this morning, a 15 minute recording off the Discovery Channel from early AM. 10 minutes was of Francis Ford Coppola talking about Apocalypse Now, and the second half was Ronnie Lott & Joe Montana talking about TiVo, all the while the little TiVo icon in the lower right of the screen. Had to go into backdoors to see it in the "Now Playing" list since it's not on the Showcases or TiVolution Magazine, but it recorded something this morning...
Posted by: cdonohue
On my series 2, 2 teleworld programs were recorded and placed in my now showing listed. I have no stars and nothing in showcases. What fun :)
Chris!
Posted by: LiveBlues
It's amazing, but then again it isn't. There is another thread out there where people are threatening to get rid of their TiVo because of the silly little star on the menu. Here people are complaining because they didn't get it. That's what makes this forum one of my favorite places anymore.

I doubt it would. If you have backdoors enabled and are listing suggestions in your To Do List, you can see the hidden Teleworld Paid Program Season Pass. If you cancel that one, you're cancelling the hidden Season Pass, and future airings won't record until it gets around to recreating that Season Pass, which may be awhile.
The first three were the test pattern. With closed captions on, you can read the date of the broadcast, and that one was dated for March 11, not the 16th. The only possible clips was the one in the second 15 minute show on the 18th, but on the one TiVo that recorded it of mine, still no clips in the Showcases. The other serviced TiVo had a conflict.
The items previously accessible from the star menus should still be present in your Showcases.

It seems to me that the total lack of success being reported here in regards to this would indicate that the failed in the implementation of this little extra, as cool as it would have been to see it actually work. The star is gone from my Tivo - the option to vote is completely gone. This being said, the showcase remains, but only the option to record the Oscars remains. I recorded the Tivo spot on my Replay and what is odd is that it only recorded 15 minutes or so, although I had it programmed to record a half-hour. I guess Tivo blew it in this one. Ah well, props to them for trying anyways. RB!!! ANY COMMENTS?!?

I haven't voted yet and the star is gone. Still haven't seen the trailers or interview with Coppola.

Looks like Discovery Channel played the wrong tape ;)
Posted by: grecorj
Didn't check today, but as of last night...nada! Just links to guide data for BW special and Oscar show...no "voting", no "clips", no "interview.
Posted by: grecorj
Uh, what is the "star" people are referring to?
Posted by: Philosofy
The star is on the main TiVo menu, at the bottom, alerting you to some new content on your TiVo, like the mentioned clips, the lexus commercial, etc.
Any word on why a lot of us did not get the clips? I had some test pattern recorded, and get discovery from a sattelite feed. I was looking forward to the FFC interview.

I think walters sussed it: Discovery Channel played the wrong Teleworld Paid Program.
We haven't had a mess up quite this bad since PAX refused to air the Halloween episode of TiVo Takes.
Thanks to Rasheed for correction, re: PAX vs. CBN. I miss the old TiVo Takes forum.
Posted by: rasheed
It wasn't CBN, it was PAX.. I think.
Rasheed
Posted by: grecorj
Hmmm....no clips...no FFC interview...I guess I'm going to have to "make do" with the 2 hr E! red carpet pre-show, 1/2hr ABC red carpet pre-show, the 3.5hr Oscar show, the E! post show @ 1230am, etc., etc., etc.
Seriously...and this is an understatement...but this stinks. Was really looking forward to "voting".
Posted by: walters
Well, there's still some time, so it's possible they might fix it.

You're right. I went back and made the appropriate correction.
Incidentally, that Halloween incident prompted TiVo to move TiVo Takes from PAX to Discovery. Public opinion at the time was that PAX, being a religious-emphasis channel, was opposed to programming promoting such a "satanic" thing as Halloween.
(Gee, I wonder if that means all the other paid programming on that channel do in fact represent the views and opinions of PAX and its parent compan(y/ies).)

Spilling the beans...
Discovery aired the wrong tape.
We have some really cool footage that you'll get Thursday (hopefully) when we try to get the right thing aired again.
It's not an ad for anything. It's more of a cool exclusive for TiVo folks.
Cheers,
-RB

So when ya fix this on Thursday, is it going to go on as originally planned?
Posted by: mohanram
What about Series2 folks? Will they get the TiVo Oscar showcase? One of the moderators in the forum said that the Series2 and DTiVos wont get the Oscar showcase since they use old software. But the CSR at TiVo told me that Series2 would get the Oscar showcase within a few days as well. Who is right ?
RB, I hope you can answer this question.

Tonight is a night of both sadness and joy: sadness, because BBC America won't be airing parts two and three of Red Dwarf "Back in the Red"; and joy, because it means it won't cause a conflict with the Teleworld Paid Program, albeit arriving later than originally intended.
With Discovery's prompt resolution to the problem, I take it you won't be shopping TPP off to another network?

I believe it's just the appearance of the new menu item with a star in TiVo Central that you won't get. You can still go into the showcases menu and see all the same things.

Ok, it's Wednesday evening, I've got no trailers, no interview with Frances Ford Coppola and only the choice of recording the actual awards and the Barbara Walters (yechh!) special. I haven't voted and I was really looking forward to viewing the trailers. Anybody got any ideas? P.S. - I'm still a neophyte - don't know how to access the "backdoor". Any help would be appreciated.
Posted by: Angus McSweeney
And now you see just how much of a neophyte I am! I read the first page of threads and posted my reply, then realized their were two more pages that included the information that things should improve on Thursday. I'll sit down and be patient.

Well, I don't know if 2.0.x software has the stealth Season Pass for Teleworld Paid Program. I thought that was introduced with 2.5.1. Yes, I distinctly remember Otto advising people to cancel any Wishlist or Season Passes for that show they may have before upgrading to 2.5.1 or that special features utilizing reserve space may not work properly. (My explicit Season Pass has worked.)
I was not part of the 2.5.1 beta.
Posted by: mohanram
I just spoke with a CSR at TiVo. CSR says that Series2 TiVo owners will not get the Oscar TiVo Showcase. I do not know how true this. There is so many conflicting replies from different people. Another CSR told me 2 days ago that my Series2 TiVo would get the show case in a few days.
RB, can you clarify things as to whether Series2 will get the Oscar Showcase or not? Thanks
Posted by: Mike Wells
Well, after my daily call today, I see two Teleworld Paid Programs Scheduled for Thursday morning at 4:02 for 10 minutes and 4:12 for 20 minutes.
So it looks like this will all be straightened out. :)
Posted by: dkroboth
Looks like Discovery aired the right clips. The first one was the FFC interview + some Tivo II info. The second was trailers plus was some tivo oscar special. As of now, the only thing appearing in my showcase is the FFC interview. Perhaps after today's daily call the rest will be straightend out?
-Dan
Posted by: grecorj
The FFC interview was available in Showcases this morning, but I didn't watch it yet. No trailer showing up yet.
And where do I go to vote???? No obvious link from the Showcases menu....
And no star.
Tivolutionary, please explain!
Posted by: Mike Wells
It takes your TiVo a LONG time, it seems, to process the video into the appropriate clips. I think it also takes some special instructions during a daily call once the clips have been "digested." I'd look for them to appear tonight or tomorrow.
Posted by: JYoung
I got another star on my TiVo Central menu this morning pointing to the Coppola interview.
Batten down the hatches....
Posted by: HTH
Interesting. The TiVo with my explicit Season Pass got the star Coppola interview and linked video, but the one with TiVo's own implicit Season Pass didn't get either.
Posted by: Hunter Green
Series 2, still nothing on the menu or in Showcases. No to-do or history of anything Teleword-related. Last call this morning. ::sigh:: I think we're finally getting our definite answer about v2.0.x Series 2s.
Posted by: rODbegbie
Last night at about 12:14am, I decided to check to see if my TiVo was planning on recording anything.
It had completed a daily call at about 12:14am. In the Discovery channel guide, both Teleworld programs were showing. However, they were not marked to be recorded.
I tried going to the "Find program by name" menu and entering Teleworld, but it was not to be found.
Looks like some people's daily calls were too close to the scheduled time, so the TiVo didn't have time to do housekeeping type things and find the broadcasts.
Edit: Oh, and it's a version 2.5.1 standalone
rOD.

The text says hear why Copola loves his TiVo but I didn't hear him say anything about it in the video....
Posted by: John494900
last night before i went to bed my TiVo said it was going to record both shows, but I still have nothing in my showcases, no interview or trailers. nada. I even forced a couple daily calls.
Maybe later tonight.

Yeah, I noticed that too. So, I went and watched the raw footage from Thursday and after the 5 minute mark he starts talking about his TiVo.
BUT I have an idea. The Teleworld broadcast on Monday doesn't have the part about TiVo. In fact, it doesn't any of the footage that was broadcast Thursday morning. The two snippets are completely seperate versions of appearently the same interview.
So, my guess is that the Thursday morning Teleworld hasn't been processed yet. Perhaps tomorrow then?

It was publically stated that it was 2.5 that had software for the new clips/showcase thing I believe. So, it won't happen until boxes <2.5 get updated.
I don't think the trailer clips will be shown because the voting is over...sad. I hope they change that.
I guess this campaign was just not very smooth because of the problem caused by the wrong tape being originally shown.

Sorry to double post this...
We had some post production and broadcast problems, and we're going to try one more time Sunday morning. Cross your fingers.
Series 2 boxes won't get it this time. That release is coming soon.
I don't think DIRECTV boxes will get it either. Again, that release will come soon -- probably very soon.
And there are probably some other circumstances that would mess it up, like no Discovery channel, or no phone calls, etc.
It's not a perfect system, but we're working on it!
-RB
Posted by: grecorj
I know DTiVo boxes and Series2 boxes are in the minority, but I feel slighted nonetheless. :(
Does RB's "that release is coming soon" in his post last night refer to V3.0 software??

There's a freaky thought. People swapping recordings of paid-programming. Wonder when MPAA or someone will try to shut that down.

Looks like everything finally arrived with this mornings TPP. Whoop

I now have mucho clips in the showcase, and the bottom menu item in TiVo Central cycles between:
o TiVo Exclusive: Coppola on the Awards
o Go Inside the Academy Awards
o New for Oscar: Best Animated Film
o Watch the 'Best Picture' Trailers
The menu item changes every time I go into TC via the TiVo button.
Cool!

Crazy how some of us can't get enough of this, but other people can't stand it.

There's a big difference between watching a bunch of trailers on a videotape of the movie you just bought (ads you have to FF past to get to what you want) and trailers you can ignore or play if you want, and pick from a menu (DVD or TiVo). As long as it's not displacing something else more valuable, I think it's fun.
