How to switch it off???

Not Standby, but before ripping the plug out of the wall.
The reason for this is that when I was doing the disk upgrade I couldn't find ANY mention of what the routine should be.
Linux should really be 'shutdown -h now' but of course you don't have this. Trying to catch it during a restart isn't a sure option either.
I eventually just sat down next to the box and tried to hear any disk activity - definitely sub-optimal!
However on the plus side it's quite Zen just listening to the disk hum gently :) .

Everything I've read or heard indicates that the TiVo is designed to cope with losing power suddenly. The recommneded method of powering one down is to switch off at the wall.
As with all equipment containing DRAM, best practices is to wait five seconds after removing power before switching it on again.

You're supposed to just yank the power lead out. It won't harm the disks - but don't quote me on that :D

The Tivo system files are all mounted as readonly.... so, pulling the plug won't cause a problem.... unless of course it was in the middle of a recording in which case it might be lost :)

FAQ 244346 : How do I unplug my Tivo(r) Personal Video Recorder?
WARNING: This procedure involves potentially dangerous voltages and should not be carried out by users with wet hands or excessive blood-alcohol levels
1. Grasp 3-pin mains plug securely at interface between plug and wall socket.
2. Pull 3-pin mains plug firmly and quickly away from wall socket until all gold-coloured pins are clear of their respective sockets.
3. Place 3-pin mains plug safely on floor (well clear of any sources of moisture) and repeat similar procedure with 2-pin plug on reverse of Tivo(r) Personal Video Recorder unit.
Sorry I just had to ;)
