Noise-reducing product?

I've got one of the all-time noisiest Tivos.

Anyone know if there's some kind of glass, or clear plastic case I can acquire that will cover the TIVO but still allow me to access it? I'm imagining something with small holes so that the unit can still get air, but have much of the sound be masked.

My friend has such a casing for his computer, so it occurred to me that maybe something exists for the TIVO.

I assume it's the hard drive "clicking" thats noisy and not your fan?.?. If so, I just upgraded mine with an 80g hard drive and it was extremely noisy. I did a search for "accoustic" and found a program that did wonders for it...hardly audible now. The program was specifically for a Maxtor hard drive and supposedly it will slow down your access time, however, I haven't really noticed that since my Philips DirecTivo had slow access times to begin with. I know there are some programs out there for different brands of hard drives.

Put a microphone in your A/V cabinet, run it to a sound card in a PC, invert the wave and run it back through a small speaker in the cabinet.

Just kidding, :) I've always wanted to try that, but I doubt it will really work.

Just for your interest, that technique does work with headsets. The problem is that:

1) The delays in the system are such that the high frequencies are not inverted fast enough so the sound elimination head sets use standard mechanical absorbing for the higher frequencies.

2) The absorbing is most effective in a local area, The sound energy is actually more in other areas to make up the difference.

So: If you see active sound reduction head phones, then they work, if done right.

Unfortunately the physics of sound means that active reduction will not work in the case we are considering, I think...

Change hard drives. :)

Ok, not the most practical but when I pulled the original Quantum drive and installed twin Maxtor 60 gigs in my TiVo, the Maxtors running in tandem were quieter than the single Quantum lct drive.

I upgraded a DirecTivo 1 with a Maxtor 120gb. I was hearing a clicking sound (i assumed during disk head movement), not like terminal disk noises. I ran the AMSET program from Maxtor on the drive and it seems to be much quieter so far, time will only tell.

Thanks for the info!. :D
