Melting TiVo! Hot Hot Hot!

I recently added a 80Gig Wd to my HDR112, and it's internal temp is up around 39 deg C.

-Is this normal?

-Is this safe?

-Can I add a stronger internal fan (running of the 110V side of the power supply)?

39 is a perfectly fine temperature. It should still say "Normal" on the System Information screen. Sure, you can add a stronger fan, although I don't think it'd be necessary for you.

Welcome to the TiVolution!

Originally when I bought the box (with 1.x SW) it would reset on its own, when the temp got near 40. After 2.5 Sw, the fan stayed on all the time, and it seemed to stop resetting.

Now that it's running near 40 again, I'm a bit concerned.

Hey I've got three, running at 46-48'. Never had any trouble with any of them so you're OK.

Willard, please repeat: You have SA Tivos that run at 46-48 degC ??????

I have a sony that runs at 54 degrees. I even went online to 1coolpc and replace the fan...I cant cool the machine down

Is it a bad thing when smoke comes out of the TiVo or is that just some kind of special effects?

The first rule of electronics: Keep the smoke in the wires. :)

Bunsen out....

Mine was running around 40 for a long time with no ill effects.. Then the fan started to die and it would begin to stutter and drop audio and pixelates at about 47C. I dropped a real case fan in and now it runs around 29-34C just fine.

How did you wire in a real case fan? Right off the board? Or did you drive it off the powersupply? Where did you get the fan and how much?

I just went to a local computer store, got a case fan, and hooked it inline to the drive's power. It has a passthru connector to do just that. I didn't want to wire it to the motherboard connector, for two reasons. One, I don't want to accidently screw up my mobo by trying to pull too much current through it, and two, I wanted the fan always on, not controlled by the software.
