I recently picked up an 80-gig maxtor from newegg.com for $118 ($125 including shipping). Bought with amex blue and pricematched to $99 for a seller on pricewatch (l-buy.com -- actually shows $99 on the webpage). Net cost is $106 shipped.

Fry's still has the Seagate 80 GB for 139 with a Seagate $50 rebate = $89

Dell's having a 10% sale on storage products through Monday. They have a Maxtor 80GB drive for $131.95 before discount (should be $118.76 after 10% off) and free shipping.

Is Seagate a good drive to use in a TiVo upgrade? I'm always seeing Maxtor recommended as the best. I have a Sony TiVo.
Thanks,
Mike

I've always preferred seagate for pc drives because of their 3 year warranty. (Not sure what maxtor offer, some other mfrs only give one year). Been burned by Fujitsu in the past; they had some real crap 1.2Gb drives a few years back, and only 12 month warranty on them. Binned so many of them at work it almost got to be standard practice to swap them out beforehand!

Fry's still has the Seagate - the mail-in rebate states it's good for purchases {only at Fry's} between 3/15 and 3/28.

The Seagate Barracuda IV drives are excellent drives, but they are quite at bit hotter that the slower Maxtors. I'm sure others have done it and may disagree, but I wouldn't put 2 in a DirecTivo since it's "cooling challanged" anyway.

I'm new to the forum, having just bought a DirectTivo, so I'm not sure about the size limitations, rotational speed preference, etc... (I'm a dishplayer convert) but a place to keep an eye on is www.slickdeals.net
Right now there's a deal for a WD 120g for $119 if you have Amex Blue. If seen deals on 80g drives there sa well.
Is there a link with general Tivo upgrade knowledge, and downloads for upgrade utilities?

Tofucious - Welcome to Tivo! :)
A good place to start is here:

And also check out the FAQ link at the top of this page (in the Forums pulldown box) http://www.tivofaq.com/hack/faq.html

Hi all,
Just wanted to alert people out there that getting the absolutely cheapest drive may not be the best way to go about things. I got an 80GB drive by picking the cheapest I could find on Pricewatch.
It was a "white label" Maxtor, meaning that Maxtor had made it, but their logo wasn't on it. A friend in the business told me that the lowest quality drives are the ones singled out for white label, while the best ones get the manufacturer's logo, and the higher price that comes with it.
Anyway, after putting my white label drive into the Tivo, it started pausing, skipping and occassionally crashing. I took the drive out last night, and the Tivo seems to be doing OK so far. This might have happened with any drive, but I can't help but wonder if you have a better chance of upgrading successfully if you get a supposedly higher quality drive with a logo on it.
There are probably people on this forum who have greater experience in these matters.
Cheers
/Martin

I picked up my 80 gig today at Comp-USA for $139. Works great. It is COMP-USA Brand, but it appears that way only on the box. Once you open the package, no more mention of CompUSA, only Maxtor.
With my WD 40gig, ran at 35C. This one holds at 30C. Good news.
