auto upgrade 2.5 - now only 32 hrs

After I bought my Tivo, I put in a 40 gig hard drive, replacing the 20 gig on my HDR212. I know what you are thinking...why bother? Well, it was not being used in my computer, so put it in the Tivo.
On software 1.3, I had 42 hours basic. Left it plugged into the phone, and it upgraded to 2.5. I like the improvements, but for some reason, it only shows I have 32 hours of basic recording left.
Just for kicks, I backed up / restored image to the old 20 gig (using MFSTOOL). When I boot with the 20 gig, I show 21 hours basic. I dunno what the deal is. I did expand the image to take advantage of the 40 gigs, but 10 hours disappeared after the auto upgrade.
Anyone else experience this? Is this 2.5 upgrade only supporting up to a 30 gig hard drive?
Thanks everyone!

With version 2.5, several hours (10-12 I believe) are set aside for "extras" such as showcases and stuff. This is normal. You are actually seeing what those that have 30 hour units get. Most have 40 gig drives in them, 30-32 hours of basic recording.
The reason you didn't see if before is that the smaller untis don't have any reserved space becuase there isn't room for it and still offer the advertised amount of space (14 or 20 hours).

Thanks for the reply. I suppose it's time now to save up for the larger hard drive.
One more thing, though, other than the web project, is there any way to discover how much room remains on the hard drive? The reason I ask is, now that I have 2.5, I can use the "space saver" mode for medium to Best quality. Well, since there is no "battery Meter" if you will, and since there is no easy way to estimate the space VBR takes, I pray I don't run out of time.
Thanks again!

I think that the 40 gig was the problem, I replaced it with the 80 gig today, now I have 88 hours. 40 gig is going back in the PC. Happy trails.

Put both the 80 and 40 gig in the tivo.

Yes there seems to be a 'problem' with the 40GB drives. The newer 30Hr TiVos ship with them and it looks like when the unit sees a 40GB drive it sets aside the extra space that these retail 40GB units have. The earlier 30hr units shipped with 30GB drives and have much less 'reserved' space.
If you use suggestions you can use that as a space remaining indicator.
