Where to have TIVO upgraded

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

First, look at me. I've had the thing less than a week and I'm already interested in these stories posted here about upgrading to a larger size hard drive! 35 hours not enough?! LOL

I'm in Los Angeles.

If I don't want to open it up myself and be responsible for the damage caused myself :p who can I seek out to do it and how much should I have to pay to do it?

Also what size HD should go in (is there a maximum?)

Does it make sense to wait for the warranty to run first?

What are your experiences? Thanks in advance.

Although I don't live in LA, I have been extremely happy with my TiVo from Weaknees.com.

I seem to remember that they're located in LA, but it doesn't matter really since everything ships free anyway. They sell upgraded TiVos, do it yourself kits...AND they'll upgrade your TiVo if you send it to them. If you live in LA, maybe they'll take a walk in....you should definitely check. These guys are really nice and very responsive. I can't say enough great things about them.

Finally, I think the largest you can add is a 120, but I just found this page at weaknees.com that gives you all the options.

I'm assuming here that you have a Direct TV combo since you said you have 35 hours . . .

Read Hinsdale's How to He can even do the work for you.

If you have experience adding a HD to your home computer, then doing a TiVo upgrade by yourself should be no problem. If you haven't already, start by reading Hinsdale's instructions which are tacked on top of the Upgrade Forum.

As far as waiting for the warranty period to lapse, I can tell you from experience that those 90 days do seem to crawl by. I picked up an 80GB drive 40 days into my TiVo experience because it was at a very limited time sale price of $99. Just couldn't wait the remaining 50 days! If my unit craps out in the next 5 days, I suppose the jokes on me.

If you just want to get a kit that you can plug and play check out http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/upgradeservice.html ...very good prices.

Get Hinsdale to do it. His prices are very reasonable. If you do it yourself you can save some money. I bought 3 drives from him. It took less than 10 minutes to install for each machine. It's very simple. But if you don't fell comfortable doing it yourself just ship it to him.

Wait for the warranty to run out before you open it up.
Once you open it up it's your . But if you must upgrade I live in the San Diego area and could help you add a b drive for a small fee.

Thanks!

I'll be back in 79 days to look for you...I've been looking for an excuse to get back to La Jolla anyway since that's where I went to college.
