Modem Problems?

I have a HDR112, and have read that TiVo's built in modem is very likely to get damaged in the smallest of electrical surges. Is this true? Will the modem last longer if I typically leave it unpluged? Then I can just plug it in a few hours a week and force a call when the weather is nice.

I have seen threads here somewhere about modem problems caused by surges, try the search tool. But obviously the modem is not "very likely to get damaged in the smallest of electrical surges" else everyone's modem would be fried.
