When to pull the Plug before backup

I have a Sony SVR 2000. In what mode should it be when you pull the plug for a backup... in stand by or on?

Thanks

Doesn't matter. Standby just turns off the video output from the TiVo.

I like to do it immediately after it starts rebooting with a 'Restart the Recorder'.

But really it doesn't matter.

It remembers standby mode, so if you yank the plug in standby, then after you boot it again it will boot (and you will see the boot screen and so forth), then go right back into standby. This has confused many people into thinking they screwed their box, when they really didn't.

The point of it remembering standby mode is that if you put the thing in standby and leave your speakers/audio on, and there's a minor power outage while you sleep, you won't suddenly wake up to the incredibly loud blaring of the Tivo intro video. They introduced this feature in 2.0 or 2.5, I think. Not a widely known feature, admittedly.

But yes, it doesn't matter when you yank the plug. You won't damage the Tivo's software, which is mounted read-only.

Thanks for your replies.

I've been lurking in this forum since may of 2001 when I bought my svr2000. I just purchased 2 80 gb Seagate hard drives and am now ready to upgrade.

My PC is all SCSI. I plan to use one of these drive temporaly as C drive to hold the backup until I restore to the other and then go ahead and bless it, will this work?

Yes, the SCSI drive will work fine as long as it's not all NTFS. Just adjust the commands correctly to refer to that drive instead of hdc (IDE primary master)
