New Tivo, upgrade before 1st power on?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just received my DSR6000 today... I haven't even turned it on or activated it yet. I will be signing on for the lifetime deal, of course.

I'm not sure what's in this box yet (1 or 2 drives), but I'd like to put 2 80Gig drives in it.

I might have not looked hard enough, but did not notice an upgrade FAQ, so here are my questions:

1. Shall I do the hard disk swap before activation, or should I use this unit for a few days before attempting the upgrade?

2. Is there any other upgrade recommended? If so, in what order should these upgrades be performed?

Thanks for your help.

I would say set up first. During the upgrade process you'll make a backup that will have all of your settings, etc. That way, if something goes wrong, you can just backup to the most recent version of software with all your basic settings intact.

Please run it for a few days before you upgrade it. Activate it with DTV. Get both tuners running.

If it is a single drive unit (there are several threads on how to tell - look in the vents or turn on the backdoor codes and look at the log files) then you lose nothing by upgrading.

If you have a dual drive unit, you will most likely lose the recordings you make.

Also the backups are much smaller after having been setup.

Other upgrades: Ethernet. Replacing the remote if you get an old sluggish model.

See Hinsdale's guide for upgrading. It is VERY easy to follow if you read the thing carefully (I spend an extra 1.5 hr this weekend reupgrading after my replacemnt 80GB arrived because I didn't carefully read it and was running the wrong command).

Thanks guys... I appreciate the help.

I will setup and activate the box first and perform the hard disk upgrade this weekend.

I'm seriously considering the TivoNet upgrade as well... probably at a later date.
