TiVo annual financial report filed in US

US companies file annual financial reports with very long commentaries designed to explain what they are doing, and prevent anyone from ever suing them for not warning of investment risks. Bearing that in mind this article which I got to via Yahoo but which is a public filing and may be available through many routes is interesting.
It discusses numbers of subscribers, strategic partners, and analyses TiVo's expenditure between sales, admin, R&D etc.
This forum dosn't discuss share prices of course, but the link is merely to a statutorily published document
the correct link

I thought this was interesting:

Subscription revenues from lifetime subscriptions are recognized ratably over a four-year period, our best estimate of the useful life of the personal video recorder

This probably doesn't take into account the option of people adding larger disks, since the basic disk sizes would be significantly improved upon over four years. A large number of people would replace the machine simply to get additional recording space.

Four years sounds about right for something like a TiVo. Some will last longer, but by then you'll be itching for a new toy!
It's good that they are not inflating their profits/moderating losses by taking all the lifetime subs as revenue in year one. Gives the figures more credibility.
