TiVo mentioned on WEEI

It looks like Boston sportswriter Gerry Callahan just got a TiVo. He's trading barbs with his co-host John Dennis.

The live webcast is available.
I've got to go to work, so I'm starting to record it

Damn, and I thought I would get to post this......However, was it Callahan that got it or was it Meatapparel who got the TiVO????
Posted by: trojanrabbit
I'm 99.99% sure it was Callahan. Meterpareil is too cheap to buy anything like TiVo. He'd be hounded off the show.
But I heard nothing else after I posted. I think he said he was going to play with it over the weekend. I'll keep recording for the next few days.

I heard it as well this morning. I believe it was John Dennis who said he was very afraid of TiVo.
Let's see if they continue the TiVo parade as much as they do with 24 and the Soprano's.
Posted by: trojanrabbit
Of course he could be saying that because he usually takes the contrary position to Callahan, just to keep things lively.

I thought I heard the line "......was given to me by my wife...."
So it still could be Meatapparel who received it.....

From listening to it again, Callahan got a 75" TV, and he couldn't figure out how to set the volume on it. It isn't really clear if he got a TiVo or not.
Meterpareil was asking Dennis if he had a TiVo, and he said he didn't because he was afraid of it.
Seems like one of them has one.

I was under the impression that Callahan was getting it as part of a big home theater upgrade.
I believe Sean McAdam has one, he mentioned on the air a time or two. If you have to cover sports for a living, a TiVo is a great way to make sure you can view the games...

Callahan was the recipient and they were goofing on him for not being able to operate it correctly - something about getting somebody technical to make a housecall for Gerry - saw a picture of the three of them Dennis, Callahan and Metapareil - W O W John Dennis is clearly not looking for a TV or Cable gig has he let himself go!

Just curious are you analog or digital in this taping process? I use to tape Stern on a VHS HiFi unit with line-in capability - start it @6:00 am and would get a tape of the whole morning show - stopped this process after 6+ years as the videotapes were starting to demand their own home ;) Plus he lost MAJOR POINTS with the wife and I when he got divorced {although hindsight evidence certainly seems to indicate that it was she not he that tore the sheets [she is remarried to another highly successful man [millionaire from the garment trade] }

Radio hooked up to computer sound card, running Goldwave. If recording "The Big Show" I can set a timer to start recording. It will record up to 9 hours at once. I'll then convert to MP3 and download to my MP3 player. I'd rather listen to that than listen to the evening guy rant about wanting a domed stadium to replace Fenway (OHH, Pedro's hurt, it's too cold for him). If I know I want to keep them, I'll also cut commercials out. I have about 120 hours of programming the week before and the week after the Super Bowl on one CD.
I used to use videotape, then digitize, but that's just too much a waste of time.
I tried to record off the website, and it's worked a couple of times, but I don't trust an internet connection to work all day.
[jinx] Hmm, Derek Lowe has a no hitter through 6. Last year after Pedro had a bad opener, Nomo no-hit the Orioles. Tonight, the Sox are playing the Orioles. [/jinx]

This morning Dennis & Callahan were discussing the last episode of 24, when Callahan said he was going to TiVo the next episode of 'The Shield', mentioning how he could fast forward and rewind through it.
Dennis asked if he could 'bring the TiVo in with him'.

This morning, Callahan was waxing poetic about his TiVO. He had "taped" (the word he used) yesterday's Red Sox game and watched it in just over an hour. He would FF through commericals, FF between batters, etc, and even did a slow FF through a good deal of the action, going back to Play to catch important sequences.
He also said he was excited to have his TiVO record every minute of the Masters tourney and can't wait to FF through the boring parts.
I tried to call into the show this morning to talk TiVO with Callahan, but I lost reception on my cell before they connected me live....oh well.....

I sent an email to him yesterday, and referenced this forum. Don't know if he actually got the message or not.....

Hey, I e-mailed too!
Cool.

jlb-
How much of the show do you get to listen to live?
I'm usually arriving at work by the time the 'Headlines' section is over around 8.

I listen from 6-6:15 on my way to the train in Newburyport. I also recently bought a little AM/FM radio so I can continue to listen on the train, through reception is a little tough until I get half way to Boston.
Today John was asking Gerry if he was going to TiVO the Marathon so he can skip the Kenyans and watch only the American runners in about one hour. He also asked Gerry if he was going to TiVO the Masters so he can skip the real boring parts.
I love the fact that they are focused on TiVO these days. Does TiVO, the company, do any radio advertising? I'd love for WEEI to be able to say something like "WEEI, the official Sports Radio station of TiVO". But of course, just their banter about TiVO is great and its free!

You're a good ways from the transmitter. Myself, I could probably see the towers if I stood on my roof. Even then, at night if I drive for just a couple of miles to the west, the signal is gone.
For some reason this year, we're getting Patriots' Day off. If I had known, I'd be at the 'Kenyan Invitational'. I'll be listening to the Ham Radio repeaters as they co-ordinate the Red Cross stations along the route. Used to help out at one of those stations, when it was easier to take the day off. I wish I knew about us getting the holiday off earlier.
Probably the only use for PIP, having the race on in the corner while watching the re-enactment of the 'Boston Massacre' at Fenway Park.
Just gives us Bay State procrastinators another day to put off dealing with the 1040.
As long as the TiVo doesn't screw up on Gerry, I can see him raving about it for a long time.

Sex and the City About a half year back one of the characters commented to another that testicular cancer was the TiVo of cancers.

My ultimate idea would be to call the show and talk TiVO. Once I establish a TiVO rapport with Gerry, it would be cool if I, or any of us, could bring regular "TiVO(community) Tips" to the show.

Unfortunately Gerry, though funny, goes completely ballistic over geek type topics. I love the headlines segment where he reacts violently to Dennis' reading of the "headlines".
Posted by: trojanrabbit
Yeah, you'd have to get in by saying you want to talk about "Mucko" or Cardinal Law or the topic of the day, then sorta work a little TiVo jab into it.
He can't go too ballistic though. Dennis is just reading the Herald headlines verbatim. Don't want to put down the newspaper that's feeding you.

This would not be the best market for that, since many, many customers still have dual-trunk A/B cable. Why encourage people to get a TiVo in a market where it will not work?
