OT: FTA Digibox

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Just had sky installed yesterday, and canceled my account with ITVD. ITVDigital are going to send someone to collect the digibox.

Does anyone know where the best place to buy a cheap FTA Digibox from.

Aren't all the FTA/FTV channels available through the Sky box?

Posted by: woody

Yes, but while tivo is recording from sky, I occasionally want to watch/video one of the other fta channels.

Your best option is to get a £99 FTA box - when they become available in a week or so.

The original ONdigital boxes haven't been available for sale for a long time - except for second hand

Within the next 2 weeks you will have the Pace at £99 and the Nokia (higher spec) at £159 starting to be available. Also if ITV do close I understand that our current warehouse stock of Pace 730's and Nokia 9850's will be free to be sold as FTV boxes..
Many dealers are already dumping the stocks, i heard of one selling new at £50 BUT there is recourse on these receivers and they remain the property of ITV digital unless the big bang happens..

Posted by: woody

I would prefer not to buy the new pace fta box as it dosen't support an RF output.

MrTonks - Do I understand that you have the Pace DTR730 in stock, and if ITVD were to close, then you would sell them.

As I understand the Pace "Adapter" only has one scart which in my view makes it a bit restrictive for those people with lots of other bits of kit to connect.

Seems like they are trying to make it simpler than it needs to be

The new Pace FTA is a compleate waste. You can only use it via a scart, and this means that your VCR would have to have 2 scarts, or a tv with 2 scarts. Why didn't Pace put an rf output. It wouldn't add much to the cost. Also the special scart plug, with the power connector. Why not use a standard scart lead, and plug the poer supply into the FTA box.

Overall this has to be the biggist design fault they have ever made. It ITVD close, the standard STB's will be for sale. Much better design and option. Havent seen the nokia box.

anyone have a link for the nokia box.

Maybe !! All stock we hold goes nowhere until either ITV goes bust and then we have to dispose of both pre-pay and pay monthly receivers.
Or ITV re-structure and want the receivers back or instruct us to sell them off. It's just a legal requirement that we hold on to them at this stage.
Either way from next week (or hopefully this week) the new Pace and Nokia will be on the market so who would need to buy ITV branded receivers, The Nokia is capable of receiving subscription TV.

will keep you informed..

At £99 with no subsequent subscription revenue, every penny you save on the design is vital! It might not cost much to add these things, but even 50p would eat into their profits.

My TV/video has plenty of SCARTS so it's fine for me.

I bet it hasn't got plenty of RGB SCARTS.

My previous VCR (a Panasonic) did have RGB pass-through on its two scarts, but somehow managed not to pass through the widescreen signal.

No, but the VCR has RGB pass through, so I'll loop it through that.

It's for the spare telly in the kid's room, so I'm not trying to get it to work with TiVo.

fair enough :)

Posted by: woody

I was looking for this for my parents. There tv has only one scart as does the video. They dont understand this to well and so I dont want to start using scart switches.

I'll wait for ITVD to close, and buy one of there STBs, or even the new nokia box, as it has AUX Scart socket..

Posted by: richard plumb

but if your VCR has RGB scart passthrough it shouldn't matter, as the VCR is composite only, so that can easily be connected to a non RGB Scart socket on the TV.

My problem is that the RGB socket is used for TiVo. How will that work if I want TIVo to record from an ITV digital box, and use the Pace/Nokia FTA box solely for watching 'live' TV when there's a clash?

And why do TVs only have one RGB socket? Isn't RGB the easiest signal to deal with?

Posted by: mrtickle

Search me - I have 6 RGB devices all chained to a single socket :(

Posted by: Richardr

It somehow seems ironic, given that virtually all 50hz TV's only have 1 RGB socket, and most scart switchers seem to have problems with maintaining all signals, especially the widescreen one, from more than one input, that the TIVO, in my experience, is the best remote controlled RGB switching device on the market!

It maintains a good picture, with widescreen switching from both the AUX and the VCR scarts.

Now if only they could market a cut-down version without any of this recording business, then there would be a new market for them. :D
