Are there still limitations on teh upgrade of direct tv tivo units?
I upgraded my Sony SA unit last year and have been very happy with it (thanks again to Hinsdale, etc). However I am in the process of relocating and may switch to directtv from cable so I am considering getting a DTV integrated unit (for the better sound) and want to know about the upgrade path.
Regards.

Drives are limited to 137GB (128GiB).
edit here:
To be more clear, I should have said "Usable drive space is limited to 137GB for each drive". You can use larger drives but only 137gigs will be utilized on each drive.

DTiVo's can be upgraded with no problem. As far as I am aware the rules are the same as with the SA's. Check Hinsdale's guide for the latest. DTiVo's dual tuners are great!

The maximum size achievable on the DirecTivo is 259 hours using 2x160GB drives.

Are you saying that 2 160 GB drives can be used based on experience or based on the drives that are currently available? Judging from your name/sig, I am guessing that you have seen it done, but I wanted to be sure since I am about to purchase a new drive to upgrade my Phillips DirecTiVo and I am debating between a 120 and 160 GB drive. Hinsdale says that there is a 137GB limit, so I didn't want to waste the $ on 23 useless gigs...

The 160GB will work but you will not use 23GB of each drive.
Using 2x160GB drives actually works as follows:
137+137=274GB 274GBX.945 (hrs perGB) = ~259hrs
Using 2x120GB drives gives you ~230Hrs. So using 2x160 drives will cost you about $130 more for the extra 29hrs you get and therefore not the most economical upgrade solution.

Thanks Hinsdale - you really are a wealth of information.
Here's a question for you - I checked underneath my Phillips DirecTiVo the other day to determine how many drives were inside. The holes on the bottom were covered from the inside by what appeared to be some sort of sticky black electrical tape. Someone else in the forums noticed this as well on their Phillips unit - have you come across this during your many upgrades? Will this reveal anything about my TiVo system, or is it commonplace?
Thanks,
KRS
