Really turning TiVo off

I am disappointed that there is no way to really turn-off a TiVo. I don't always want machinery whirring away in my living room - even if it is trying to be helpful!

So I can really switch the TiVo off when I want, is there any reason why I can't fit a normal manual mains switch in its power lead?

I normally killing the mains power to a running computer, but there seems to be no other way to completely power-off a TiVo, so I assume its designed to cope with it.

Any comments?

Iain.

TiVo's and PCs are more likely to develop faults if they are switched off-and-on regularly.

But no, it shouldn't cause any problems other than accelerated hardware failure.

However, it is doing things most of the time (like reindexing, housekeeping and so on), frequently preventing it doing these things may (I guess) lead to issues.

Yes - TiVo takes about an hour to do other things - after it has told you that the daily update has finished! It also does processing at other times!

Switching off could also cause problems with it missing the daily updates

Alphabeta, I agree with the posts here. Switching it off can only cause complications. Not only is it recording suggestions, but you can cause problems if you switch it off whilst it's indexing/housekeeping. Also, it will mean that you'll probably have to get into the habit of forcing daily updates whenever you switch it back on so that it gets updates at the times you want it to.

There is no problem with leaving it on, providing it is properly ventilated. Even then, it will turn itself off if it does overheat. Don't worry about it! Repeat after me: "TiVo knows best, TiVo knows best, I'll leave it on"
