Can't record By Time without subsribing

Just bought a new tivo SVR2000 about a couple of weeks ago. After the grace period ran out it stopped letting me set up by recording by time. I have an older SVR2000 that I can still record by time. I called Tivo care support and they tell me by the serial number, I lost this function with the
newer machine. I bought the SVR2000 so I can record close circuit tv.
I've been reading the past weeks threads and have a few questions. I have an older SVR2000 that I upgraded to 80g + 120g. Can I mirror or dd these drives and put them in the newer SVR2000? Will there be a software
problems. I downloaded the Hinsdale how to upgrade and I think all the programs listed in the report. Also I have the 30g drive from the older unit,
will it work in the newer SVR2000 and let me record by time. Or is there a simply way of changing the software to by pass this. I would hate to pay a monthly fee for something I won't use. I'm not trying to steal program data, I just want to use it as a recorder.
Also can anyone point me to some references, info about upgrading drives. Looks like most of the process is done in Linux. Will learning more about Linux give a better idea. I've been using and programing in MS-DOS
from the early 80's. Thanks

If it came with 2.0, it can't record without the service. Older boxes are grandfathered to be allowed to do this.

Also to note: putting a version of software that is lower
than a particular machine was originally built with is
one of the "Moron" upgrades. Of course, if the machine
is unsubscribed and not calling in to Tivo at all, it might not
hurt you in this case.

Does this include the people that used a 2.0.1/11 partition version to upgrade their 2.5.1/13 partition Sony SVR2000s?
