Hi guys i have an analogue phone line and i use a special splitter for my adsl internet connection; no problem here.

In the next days i will have an internet and phone connection on optic fibre.
It is written that analogue modems will not work.

So my daily call cannot be done.... hmhm what options do i have ?

a: a tivonet card ?
b: i buy a second analogue phone line just for tivo ?
c: ?

Suggest that you wait and give it a go first. If you can make clear voice calls then a modem should work at some speed, just dont expect 56k as digital lines cause a delay of the modem timing signals because they sample the audio which prevents 56k connections.

Cant give an opinion on outside UK, but for UK users about 20% have fibre on their local loop which prevents them from having ADSL (which uses copper lines) but can still use modems.

Get a tivonet - much more fun. If you can do a HD upgrade, the installation is no harder.

You get the added bonus of being able to telnet your Tivo and nose around in its files as well as ftp files onto it without ever opening it up again (except after software upgrades).

You can also runing TivoWeb so you can control it remotely via the web.

In fact you'll have so fun tinkering with it you won't have time to watch television any more:D

I have ADSL and TiVo (and in fact my serial modem) has no problems whatsoever dialling.

Can you get program guide downloads from the web then? Where?

Not really, with TivoNet your Tivo uses your broadband connection to download the program guide in the normal way.

TivoWeb is basically a web server you run on the Tivo which allows you to access the program guide in the Tivo via the web. I personally find it much easier and faster to browse channels this way than to use the Tivo.

I expect that we will see many more features in TivoWeb in the future.

Thanks for the info on TivoWeb - something I may look into in the future. How do you use your broadband connection to connect to the modem of the servers that Tivo normally dials up to get program data?

The TivoNet install script sets it up for you.

After the install you can just disconnect the phone cable and daily calls will go automatically via the adsl connection. The daily calls are internet based anyway and will work dialling to any UUNET POP.

The script also sets up a telnet connection over the ethernet card (very convenient) and I have edited the rc.sysinit script to start the ftp daemon and TivoWeb server too. There is lots of info on Tivo underground about doing this.
