Backup virgin drive to CDR?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just picked up a new SVR2000 and ordered a pair of 80G Maxtors (same as I'm running in my original SVR2000), and a bracket kit to upgrade it. I have another use for the original 30G drive and have learned through these forums that the virgin drive image will fit onto a CDR. Here's the problem. The PC I am trying to use for the backup is running Windows XP. When I connect the 30G drive as a slave drive, I can go into the disk Manager (from Computer Management), and see the drive as uninitialized. When I initialize it, it goes online, but XP doesn't recognize the partition as valid, so I cannot access the drive. All my other computers (Win 98 or NT4) are SCSI based, so I can't have a non-bootable IDE drive in them.
How can I make a CDR backup of this drive?
Thanks!

Just read the Hinsdale How To Upgrade Your Tivo, at the top of the page it explains how to make a small backup image.

The drive being a virgin no longer matters. Even a long-used drive can give a small backup file.
But you have another problem - you should never boot a PC into Windows NT/2000/XP with a TiVo drive attached. Windows will write a "signature" to the disk that can interfere with its use in a TiVo.
All you need is a visible FAT partition on your PC's disk to do the backup to. If you don't have one, create one.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I learned of this potential problem after having booted with the drive. What are the potential problems?
Steve.
