How can I determine what is hda, hdb, etc. on my comptuer with a partition?

I have a computer with windows XP and one HDD. I have checked and the Hard Disk is Primary Master. The DVD is Secondary Master (hdc?) and the CDRW is Secondary Slave (hdd?).

I created a FAT32 partition on my HDD for use when I need to backup my TIVO drive since my main drive is NTFS. I will put the TIVO drive as primary slave (hdb?), but what will the partition be called? hda1?

Thanks

Depends. Did you make it a primary partition? Or a logical partition? What number it is depends on the way your drive is setup.

Easy way: boot one of the linux boot disks or CDs. Wait until it gets to the login prompt. Hold SHIFT and hit page up. Find where it says hda: hda1 hda2.. etc. These are the lists of partitions. Try mounting them until you find the right one.

chances are if you're just now creating the partition, it will be the last one on hda1. Usually Windows makes logical partions, so it's probably something like hda5.

do what otto says...scroll up and find hdd or hdc etc and see which one is the drive you want to upgrade. Substitute that for the ones in the how-to. You can use the DVD cable if you boot from the floppy...just unplug it and plug it into you new drive.

oh yeah, do not answer any questions when the floppy boots up...hit control-c to get the # prompt and go from there.

At the bash prompt after you boot from the CD:

cfdisk /dev/hda

Will give you info about the partitions on your disk in a nice intuitive format. Navigate with the arrow keys.

what about fdisk -l
