I need help. I am trying to replace the 40GB Quantum drive in my DirectTivo with an 80GB Maxtor 5400 RPM Drive so I can keep my original drive as a backup and get more recording space.
I am using the Hinsdale How-to Tivo upgrade instructions and I'm at Page 6 OPTION #1: Backing up a single drive Tivo. I'm using the DTivoMad 4.0 Boot CD. I have connected all the drives as suggested and they all are recognized properly during the BIOS boot up sequence. When the Linux boot sequence starts I press enter to select the default startup.
A lot of information scrolls on the screen and then the screen hangs during the Partition Check of hdc which is the original 40GB Quantum Tivo drive. Information shows during the check for all items hdc1 thru hdc12. The last item shown on the screen is hdc13 with no information to the right of it. The computer hangs there.
Earlier in the process I noticed it is reporting the correct size of the drive. Any ideas of what my problem might be?

We haven't received any help with this problem yet even after PMing a couple of gurus. I wonder if there have been any previous comments sent (nothing found during search) about the files that Hinsdale recommends to be downloaded. We have downloaded the files twice and made two seperate CD's with no success.
If there is nothing wrong with the files, I guess our only option is to try to find an image somewhere. I really hate defeat!!!

Hmm. Did you try any boot options when booting the CD? For kicks and grins you _might_ try following the instructions on the boot page to disable DMA on the IDE controlers.
I'm a Tivo upgrade Novice but Linux is one thing I do know about. I just did something simmilar to what you want to do. I replaced my 40GB directv tivo drive with a 120GB drive.
For me, I have my CDR attached to primary IDE Master. I hooked up the 40GB original drive to secondary IDE Master and the new 120GB drive to secondary IDE Slave.
Everything booted well and /dev/hdc was shown as my origional 40GB drive while /dev/hdd was my new 120GB drive. All sizes checked out. I then used the following command (not bothering with a backup.)
dd if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdd bs=32k
An hour or so later it was done. I shut down, removed the 40GB drive and set it aside. I then set the new 120GB drive for Master and hooked it to secondary IDE Master. After booting I followed the directions for blessing the drive.
Everything worked fine and I still have my original 40GB drive around to use as my 'backup'.

After exhausting every avenue (even having someone PM an image), we have an 80gb tivo and have an image of the original drive stored on CD.
If anyone else experiences the problems that I have mentioned, try updating your BIOS. It worked for us.
Thanks to everyone who made suggestions for a fix.
