I've been lurking in this forum for about 9 months and appreciate everyone's input. I upgraded a SA Sony just yesterday with the excellant bootcd and instructions. Thanks to everyone for that.

Unfortunately, one of the reasons I upgraded the Sony was because Sony tech support said my hard drive (30hr Single Drive) was going bad. My unit worked fine for months until recently when I started noticing the audio and video being out of sync during playback. After telling me to unplug, reset, clear and restart, etc with nothing working - Sony said the hard drive is going bad - send it to Boston. Whoa Nelly, that takes 4 to 5 weeks - no way.

So while thinking about this I decided to tell Sony about the other problem (just to confirm it was the hard drive) that during playback I was also getting ocassional instances of digital breakup where the sound was fine but 3/4 of the picture from the bottom up was totally digitized - all screwed up. Once again, Sony said - it's your hard drive, send it in. I said you're sure there's not a chip or something going bad. No, it's the hard drive.

So, rather than be without my TIVO for 5 weeks - the 80GB Maxtor upgrade. It took me quite a while because apparently I don't read well and can't follow simple instructions but it's done. Guess what, the audio video out of sync is still there.

Now I've read how sending the signal through a receiver may cause problems and I do send the video through a receiver. But why did it work fine to begin with and now it sucks? And isn't that problem just for live TV?

Is there a chip that has failed? Does anyone have any suggestions?
