Smallville was freakin' good last night!

I tell ya, I am really liking this show.
I was very concerned about it before it started.
Since then I think it's gotten better and better.
Sure, we were all getting tired of the "krypto-disease of the week" and I'm sure we'll see more of that, but for some reason I really enjoyed last night's episode.
I really like Tom Welling as Clark. I think he will end up owning the role of young Clark Kent like Christopher Reeve owns Superman.
It's really neat how the writers are showing us different things that happen in Clark's life that influence him to become Superman. (and yes Pan, he will become Superman :D).
Anyway, just wanted to say that I liked the show last night.

Yes, it was a new episode and, for some reason that I can't put my finger on, it had a different feel to it.
More seasoned or something.
And Annette O'Toole is still beautiful. :)

Finally, they have a benevolent "power of the week" and he isn't killed off!
Posted by: Philosofy
I was wondering when they were going to use the Five for Fighting song. I was hoping it would be playing in the background, and Pete would ask Clark "What the heck is this song about?", to which Clark would reply "I don't know, but I like it." :) I was also wracking my brain to think if this kid had any place in the DC universe. As far as I can recall, Martian Manhunter is the only DC hero that can read minds.
Posted by: Bryanmc
No, he is not Hitman.
I also liked the F for F song. Thought it was used well.

I'm really liking that show, its been fun to watch. I think I've always liked Superman on TV - I loved Lois and Clark when it was on as well (and currently TiVo the reruns which just re-started).
I think I like Dean Cain as Superman more then Christopher Reeves simply because I'm just more familiar with him.
With Spiderman and X-Men running about, it seems like the perfect time for another Superman movie.

Well, crud. Our TiVo got the two rerun episodes of Buffy instead.
Can anyone dump it to tape for me? I live in Orange County, CA.
Thanks,
Andrew

You all are so lucky! I just moved into a house and got DirecTivo stating in March and haven't seen a Smallville since, as my local WB sucks and doesn't provide a signal. Any chance any Smallville fans are good with video capturing and can convert episodes to DivX or S-VCD to post in a newsgroup, super-pretty-please?

Ditto here too! The episode was a lot better than I had expected or hoped! I think my only bone of contention with Smallville is that they feel compelled to have Clark fighting other superpowered villains. The kryptonite radiation is their little way of explaining how all of these supervillains concentrate in Smallville.
But really, they don't need him fighting supervillains. In fact, last night's story could have been just as nicely done even if the kid couldn't read minds. They could concentrate on the different dilemmas that Clark (or any teenager) faces as a teenager.... crushes on girls, peer pressures, being excluded by other kids... you get the idea. How he learns to deal with these problems, his abilities, and the eventual discovery of his origin would make really fascinating television. We don't need all those super bad guys.
I wonder if they'll let Pete find out about Clark? In the comic books, the one person who knew that Clark Kent was superpowered was Pete Ross. He apparently saw Clark do something, realized he was Superboy (OK OK, "Superboy" is really corny), but never let on that he knew, figuring that Clark would eventually tell him when he was ready. That could make an interesting episode.
Still, it was a great episode last night.

Still, it was a great episode last night.
In the pre-Crisis books, Pete Ross was on a camping trip with young Clark Kent. In the middle of the night, Clark needed to change to Superboy to handle an emergency and thought that Pete was asleep. Pete wasn't or was woken up by a lightning flash which illuminated the area enough for Pete to see Clark changing to Superboy. He kept the secret as you said and would help Clark when he needed excuses to slip away....
After the post Crisis reboot, Pete Ross was still Clark's best friend when he was growing up but never find out that Clark became Superman. He did eventually marry Lana Lang who was one of the few ordinary people who knew that Clark Kent is Superman. The Ross eventually named their first child Clark Peter Ross.
I agree that last night's episode of Smallville was very well done and the bonding of the Kent family and young Ryan was done just right. It could have been easily too forced.
Anyone catch the previous episode where Jonathan Kent is driving down the road while Waylon Jennings was singing "Just a Couple of Good Ole Boys" on the radio?

To jump universes here for a sec, consider The Incredible Hulk (the TV show with Bill Bixby). They went the route that "David" went from town to town, evading Jack McGee, and still created seasons and seasons of incredible tv (no pun intended). He didn't meet other superheros in the TV series proper, which I think added to it's appeal - people could suspend disbelief for one supernatural phenomenon). In the later TV movies they had him meet Thor and Daredevil, which seemed overall to be a bad idea. It was way cooler that he was alone in the world with such a unique condition.
I stopped watching Smallville because of the super[villian/person/other]-of-the-week-due-to-Kryptonite theme they kept doing each week. I saw the title of this thread and decided to watch last night's.. It was pretty good - I agree, better than the others I'd seen.
I look forward to the "arc" episodes they'll have to have in this show where cool progress is made toward him getting closer to Superman. I hope it's not a bunch of save-the-Kryptonite-infected-cat-from-the-tree episodes from now until then end. :)
(Anyone remember V? The mini-series was great, then they tried doing an actual series after that, which quickly devolved into each episode being a "save the cat from the tree before the evil Vistors come and get it" story) Sorry about the tangents, tired. Ok, Jeff sleep now. :)

Another vote for doing away with the "Kryptonite-infected bad guy of the week" here. But I love the hints they drop. Like when Lex says something to the effect that he and Clark will be life-long friends and he see a great future for them. Or when Clark is complaining about not wanting to be a regular office schmoe and "flying around in a suit all the time."
On a side note - anyone capable of uploading DivX or SVCD versions of the show for us sorry sots who don't get WB? I can't even get a waiver for it.

I loved it when Lex referred to Warrior Angel as "A strange vistor from another planet"
Posted by: Philosofy
Its the little touches that I like: someone telling Clark he looks good in blue, him wearing a red coat, the strange visitor and crack about wearing a suit and flying. They make it very enjoyable.

What I can't believe is that these are the same guys (Brian Robbins/Mike Tollin-producers) responsible for bringing the world "Goodburger", "Kenan and Kel" and "All That". Since Brian Robbins was on "Head of the Class", we might be able to see a Howard Hesseman cameo. Supervillain Dr. Johnny Fever, what would his kryptonite induced power be?

Edit: mwahhahahahah, I did have it and it WAS one of the best Ive seen in a long time. I was getting worried that that show was going downhill therefore a while... Woo

Hey everyone,
I know I am a little behind here but I just got my Tivo recently and one of the main reasons for the purchase was that I didn't want to miss an episode of Smallville, Jag, or Enterprise. Of course now I have also discovered, Changing Rooms, Ground Force, and NHL2Night. Man I love my Tivo.
I am another one who loved "Stray." It was a nice opportunity to share Clark's secret in a way that isn't too risky to the character. Seeing Clark embracing life with a little brother was a great opportunity for character development and the writers took advantage.
I too enjoy the subtle references to Clark's future. Has anyone noticed the school mascot painted on the wall along one of the stairwells? A big bird apparently holding a shield with an S in front of it. I wish I could recall the episode but it isn't coming to me right now. I was rolling when I saw that.
Does anyone know how many more episodes there are going to be? I have also heard about a DVD for the first episode...anyone hear anything about it?
Talk to you all soon,
Mike

Actually every time you see Clark he's wearing red on his shirt or jacket. It may be something as small as just a red collar but he's always got red somewhere. I'm 95% sure on this. I've been watching for it since about the 4th episode.

The show uses the Supes colors all over the place! Blue, red and yellow, continuously. The foreshadowing is very well done, and a lot of fun.

Yeah, it was a good episode.
Except of course, that POOR CHLOE WAS LEFT HANGING!! Damn it Clark, ask that girl to the prom!! She's got a pink dress and she wants you!! Forget Lana already!! :)
Posted by: Philosofy
Yeah, but Lana has a secret about Clark! Clark is probably hoping its that she likes him, but I think she wants to tell Clark that her relationship with Whitney is one of appearances only, and that they are both really gay. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)
Posted by: Ereth
They've done a great job of setting Lana up as the
"unapproachable goddess on a pedestal" while leaving Chloe as the "girl next door". From the pilot we know they've grown up together as friends and Chloe and Pete are well aware of Clarks long-standing crush on Lana. There's enough hints in place to show that Lana is, too. She's gradually come to realize that she might have feelings for Clark, but she's waiting for him to ask her. Sometimes it's hard to recognize that you are, in fact, attracted to someone you grew up with and only think of as a friend. Lex tried to throw her to Clark, but Clark didn't do anything about it, so she can't really go there, but she admires his integrity in sending her back to Whitney when Whitneys father was in the hospital, rather than taking advantage of the situation. In addition she thinks it would be wrong to dump Whitney now, when he needs her so much, even though he's treating her poorly lately.
Chloe hopes Clark will ask her to the prom in spite of his crush on Lana, simply because Lana will likely go with Whitney, and that leaves her as a solid second choice, if Clark can ever recognize that she's not just his friend, but an attractive girl.
Posted by: Bryanmc
I don't like Chloe.
I think it's fine for Clark to "leave her hanging."
No sense in leading her on if he's got no intention of ever pursuing a relationship.
Posted by: Philosofy
Especially when Clark knows that Pete has a crush on Chloe. Man, are we talking Smallville here, or Dawson's Creek? I get the feeling I've been tricked into setting a season pass for a soap opera.

I should have expanded on that statement. The show has to come up with reasons why Lois is the great love of Clark's life while Lana is only his first love. I think that when he finally meets Lois, he's going to see some of Chloe's traits in her.
The problem is, Kristin Kreuk is simply incredible as Lana. I can't think of a current young actress who could play Lois and make her even more attractive to Clark. Any suggestions?

Britney couldn't play Power Girl without significant padding. Of course, Dolly Parton couldn't play Power Girl without significant padding. Power Girl was seriously top heavy.

TiVo is great, but the reason to have TiVo is for shows like Smallville. Also West Wing, etc...
Smallville is enjoyable to watch. And I love what they are doing with Lex.

I agree with you completely. Lana is Britney-hoy, definatley. I also agree that Chloe is hot. Lana is somewhat unique...she is hot and has a personality (see the thread "Now she's hotter than Britney"). Altho, I like Chloe's persistence. She seems like my type, too...I just have to be about 5 years too young :(

I dig Kristen Kreuk, I think she's extremely attractive, beautiful, fantastic, etc...
The show is pretty good. I think they are trying to balance the super kryptonite villain of the week, with the Dawson's Creek aspects of it....
I think they are doing a good job...

I just watched this episode again and wanted to reaffirm its greatness.
One thing I missed the first time was when Lex comes by Clark's house on his way to Metropolis, he gives Clark a gift.
Clark looks at it and says, "A sword?"
To which Lex replies, "It's a foil, Clark. Every hero needs one."
Beautiful.
It's touches like those that remind me that the creators aren't just making a Dawson's Creek thing here, but are mindful and respectful of the future of these characters. They are really setting them up well.
Dear God, if only Braga would be half as good on Enterprise! ;)

It's my opinion that "Stray" is the best episode of Smallville yet. Extremely well-written show. The scene where Lex talks about his younger brother, the part with the "hero's foil" you mentioned, the part where the kid warns Clark about Lex, all very well done.
And I love the fact that the kid couldn't read Clark's mind.

I saw a commercial the other day (yes, I saw one...I don't know how, heh). Anyway, it was for a new show called Birds of Prey. It's from the producers (I think producers, maybe someone else) of Smallville. It has something to do with Batman as a youth I think. The commercial looked pretty good. I think I'll give the show a shot, and check out the first few episodes when the new season starts.
Posted by: Bryanmc
Birds of Prey is actually about the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, a now crippled Batgirl, and some other chick.
Batman has left Gotham and these three are now the protectors.
A mischievous little man with goat legs sent me a VCD of the pilot. I've only started watching it, but it looks pretty good so far.

I saw a commercial for this the other night watching Smallville. (Or rather, I was fast-forwarding through the commercials, saw something on the subconscious level that made me stop and rewind, and then watched the commercial for "Birds of Prey", then rewound it again and called my son in to see the same commercial. Somebody send this to that guy at TNT that thinks commercials are dead!)
Looks interesting. I also saw a commercial for "She Spies" which may be a good replacement for "Dark Angel" (if you know what I mean! wink, wink, nudge, nudge!).

To the people who are looking for smallville episodes: Try Kazaa. I recently downloaded all 21 episodes from Kazaa and put them on CDs. The last 5 or 6 episodes are HUGE, (around 400MB each). I was quite impressed with the quality of almost every episode. 1 or 2 are pretty lossy and tend to pixilate out in high motion scenes, but are watchable. The 400MB ones are almost as good as my TiVo recordings!
To keep this on topic, (At least a little), I think that Stray is one of my favorite episodes of the series. The only one that tops it is the season finale, whose name escapes me at the moment.

Hi all, sorry to bring up an old thread, but I thought it would be proper to keep it here than start a new one.
I just started watching this show this summer since there is nothing else on. I watched the repeat premiere and I think I have seen them in order, although I'm not sure if WB is repeating them in order. But I do have a couple of questions/comments about the show:
1. Is the first or second season?
2. In some shows characters say they will drive into the city (Metropolis). I thought Smallville was in Kansas and Metropolis was supposed to be similar to New York (or at least in the East Coast). Sorry if I just offended you Superman buffs. ;)
3. I love the comments they make about future references of Superman, i.e., the "putting on a suit and flying all the time", or Clark telling Lex that he would never put on something like that ancient Greek breast plate with the snake as an S, or the friendship between Lex and Clark being stuff of legends.
4. I like the romantic tension between Lana and Clark, it's cute. (Although I must say that I hated Margot Kidder as Lois Lane in the Sup movies).
5. I like how you're seeing Clark discover his powers and trying to control them.
That's it for now, right now I just finished watching "Hug" and have about 5 more episodes on my Now Playing. Once again, I love this show!

1st season.
The Metropolis thing is the only real problem with the show from a die-hard fan's perspective.
It is New York in all the comics and movies but apparently it's Topeka in this show.
Kinda doesn't make sense, why would this place be so great as to have LuthorCorp there and all when it's still in Kansas. Nothing against Kansas but, well yeah against Kansas. That place just ain't known for bustling cities.
But you accept it and realize that the rest of the show is great and just deal with it.
Posted by: TivoDaddy
Bryan, you have some Smallville alarm that lets you know when there is a new post about this show? :D
Thanks for the answers. I was really going crazy trying to figure out how they got to Metropolis so quickly. But isn't Lex's dad just putting him in Smallville to punish him and teach him a lesson on how to deal with a corporation on a small scale?
Oh, and after watching 2 episodes, Whitney really got on my nerves. Why Clark keeps being nice to him, I don't know? Wasn't Whitney one of the guys who strung Clark up in the cornfield?

Hey, don't knock Kansas. It is my home state!
There are lots of big corporations that have HQs in Kansas--Boeing, Raytheon, and Coleman to name a few.
I think "Metropolis" is meant to be more like a Kansas City area.
The best episode was the one were Lana got dressed up in the red outfit!

I know, I know Kansas is a valued member of our country, but New York it ain't.
It's not a big deal, but it does represent a MAJOR change from the traditional story. Fortunately, it's one I can look past for now.
What will really bug me is if the show ever progresses to actual Superman time and here we have the most powerful man in the world defending.....Kansas.
And yes, I do have a "Spider-sense" on Smallville threads. :D

Considering where the show is actually filmed, I'd say Metropolis is more like Vancouver. :D

Major corps put major plants in small towns all the time. How else do you get 'company towns'? Why did Nissan put their new manufacturer plant in Missouri? Nothing against Missouri...
=)
How many major corporations install major manufacturing/production plants in already established major cities?
Posted by: rexdart
Not to mention the largest company on the planet being a mile and a half down the street from my house.
But I understand where you are coming from Bryanmc, I guess they figured it had to be the way it is for the characters to have involvement with the city.
One thing that always bugged me in the comics though, Superman would come to Gotham to hook up with Batman, or Bats would cruise on over to Metropolis for drinks with Supes, but in my mind, they both seemed to be New York?! Ah well, different creators, same locale envisioned. I don't know whether Mr. Kane or S&S ever imagined the cross over, hehe.
When does the new season start anyway? I mean I trust TiVo and all, but I just want to be sure.
Posted by: Pan Chun
Metropolis is supposed to be in New York (okay, supposed to BE New York)...but a few years back, they showed The Batman's driver's license ( ) in an issue of one his comics, and it clearly said "Gotham City, NJ"...the implication has been that they are sort of "sister cities", not too many miles apart.
In the "Legion of Super-Heroes" comics, which are set 1000 years in the future, Metropolis still exists, but they sometimes refer to "the Gotham sector" of the city...leading us to believe that, over time and with growth/sprawl, the cities merged and kept the Metropolis name.

This is one of the shows I had hoped to catch in summer reruns. If I'd known it was this good I'd never have waited. It's the top priority show for my wife and me now (until the return of "Buffy" and "The Sopranos", at least). To respond to TivoDaddy: they are showing the eps almostin order, but from different points in the season, on Mondays and Tuesdays. It has made for some confusion. All the episodes have been rerun except for these:
Craving
Drone
Crush
Obscura
and possibly Metamorphosis (if they showed it, I somehow missed it)
At least some of them will be rerun again, however, if the Yahoo TV listings are trustworthy.
I found a good episode guide here.

I'm not saying anything against the plant in Smallville. That makes perfect sense.
What we were talking about is Metropolis. My point was simply that whether it's actually New York or not, you think of Metropolis as being as big as New York. It's called the Big Peach in the comics for God's sake.
You just don't think of a New York type city in Kansas.
Of course there are plants all over in many small towns, no one's questioning that.

Fortunately with Tivo I can see when an episode originally aired and see them in that order. I was really confused when they had shows from Feb then November, back to Feb. etc. I don't understand the thinking of network producers? How do they expect to get new viewers if you can't air shows in their original sequential order? Fortunately this show doesn't have to much of a story arc so you won't get completely lost. But I think I did miss the first eight or so episodes after the premiere.
