highly annoying 2.5.5 /digital box control problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

before picking up the upgrade to v2.5.5, my Thomson box handled my Philips OnDigital box just fine via the IR blaster. But since the upgrade, nearly every time it attempts to switch to channel 11, I get channel 1 instread. This happens irrespective of whether I key '11' on the remote, use the channel key, or whether the TiVo itself attempts to switch to 11 to initiate a recording.

I have tried all available IR control settings - slow, medium, fast - same story each time. It will switch to 1 when attempting to switch to 11, roughly nine times out of ten. Other double digit channels seem to work OK.

I am certain that this is a result of the software upgrade - I received a replacement box on Tuesday following a hard drive failure. While it remained at the previous revision (1.5?) channel switching was fine. After picking up the upgrade today, channel switching is again broken, at least for 11.

This is exquisitely irritating for me because I like to record certain programmes on 11 (BBC News 24) at the weekend, and unless I'm present with the ondigital remote to put things straight, I'm going to get a random BBC1 recording instead, nine times out of ten.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this somehow? is it possible to revert to the old software? The new features just aren't worth the price of the broken functionality for me.

Have you tried the various sending digits twice, sending leading zeros and sending "Enter" after the number options to see if one of those works?

Posted by: slim

no, actually - because the ondigital box isn't intended to accept an "enter" or leading zeros. But now I think about it it may be worth a try anyway.

well, tried setting the TiVo to send an 'enter', it seems to work about 40% of the time now instead of 10%.

Is there a way to upgrade (and I use the term carefully) or revert, if you prefer - to the previous release?

Nope you can't, because your database is now in 2.5.5 format (remember the bit that said "this will take a long time"). You can never go back to 1.5.2-format guide data and your box won't ever download it again.

There was a similar thread to this last week - turned out that the person had been using the wrong IR code for their Philips box all along! Try a search for it

This is a known issue and in the sticky FAQ post. You should not use 20004 IR codes but now use 20012.

The problem is the philips boxes aren't that reliable anyway. If you're channel changing with the OnD remote you'll sometimes get the wrong channel, but as a human you can automatically compensate by trying again.

I get a failure about 10% of the time (it probably would be more but 90% of the stuff tivo records for me is on Sky1 or UkGold so there's not much channel changing going on).

I find 20012 medium (with the front IR blaster switched off) about the most reliable. With Fast it misses the channel change completely, and with Slow it quite often changes channel before the second digit is sent.

It would be nice if the remote setup could be changed to have a variable speed setting... I suspect ideal for my box would be something just slightly faster than medium.

I found the other thread, and it is indeed exactly the same problem - a failure to set the Philips ITVD box to 11,22,33 etc, following upgrade to 2.5.5.

I can't agree that the problem is due to the ITVD box, because before 2.5.5, both Thomson boxes I've had were able to change to 11 etc very reliably.

Tony, your point about channel changing - doesn't the TiVo perform a channel "change" before recording a new programme irrespective of whether it's already on the current channel? Mine does, or at least it used to, I haven't noticed if this behaviour has changed in 2.5.5. So even if I'm already on 11, it will usually inadvertently switch to 1 before recording!

ANYWAY .. I've switched to 20012/medium and this has helped considerably, though I believe that channel changing is still a bit less reliable than it was under the previous TiVo s/w using 20004/medium.

Sorry I missed this in the FAQ.. I did look actually!

Again, many thanks.

The OnD box seems to be better at staying on the same channel than changing to a different one, ie. if I'm on channel 26 I never get dumped onto channel 2 or 6 using 20012/medium, but if I'm on something else it occasionally misses.

I rarely use channel 11 (not sure what that is at the moment... one of the childrens channels?) so I've not been bitten by the double digit thing. I have seen it while channel surfing though.

I have seen my TiVo change chennel from 11 to 11 and end up on one, I'm afraid. I'll see how it gets on using 20012 though.

ch 11 = BBC News 24.

Cheers
James

I notice that you have a replacement box.

Is it also possible that the IR wands/blaster relationship has moved as well, also contributing to failed channel changes?

It may be worthwhile experimenting with the positions.
