Shell Access on a Series 2 TiVo

Hello all. Been a lurker for a couple days now soaking as much info as I could. Thanks to all the pioneers!
I have a Series 2 Tivo, Software version 2.0.3. I hvae been sucessfully able to access the drive though a couple different boot CD as well as a custom built 2.4.0-test1 kernel.
I tried to add the normal "exec < /dev/ttyS3 >& /dev/ttyS3; bash --login" line to the rc.sysinit file onto partition hdX7 (it appears that hdX4 has no ext2 partition -- which based upon the posts is normal). After removing the drive and placing it back into the TiVo the rc.sysinit file reverted to a pre-edited copy. So after making the changes I did a chattr +i rc.sysinit to lock the file down.
I just happened to stumble onto the right serial port setting to communicate with the TiVo Series 2 before the main boot sequence (115200, N81), and after locking down rc.sysinit I get the following:
Partition 0 signature is false, trying alternate
diskboot found partition 0 signature is false.
Service number is 14000***********.
What is password?
If I do a chattrib -i rc.sysinit everything boots fine but again the rc.sysinit file reverts to it's bad self and no shell access.
It's there anyway around this?! Anybody figure out a way to update the signature files?!
Thanks in advance.

Not yet.
You need to modify the PROM to skip the file check (like they do on DTiVo to get around the file check).
If you could modify the PROM file and post it here, a lot of people would be happy.
There is a thread over at the TiVo Underground on this topic (vs here at the TiVo Upgrade Center).
