The Heat is killing me

I upgraded by adding second Maxtor 80 GB 5400 RPM drive. A is original 40 GB. The system gives messages of shutting down for heat and goes into reboot about every 30 minutes. Brand new clean system! Can I add second fan or larger fan?
YES I did plug the fan back in!

This may be a silly question-- but you did plug the fan back in, right? It's really easy to overlook...

Yes, it is. I forgot to plug in a fan on a D-Tivo after fixing it and I shipped it back to my parents like that. My brother was able to plug it in easily enough, but it's very easy to overlook.

Yes I did plug the fan in!

What is the Internal Temperature for the System Information screen say? Also, can you feel any air movement from the fan?

By the way this is a Sony SAT-T60. I've gone into reboot mode and can't get the system up now. I took new drive B out and still won't work. I'm restoring to new drive B and will see if that works. Then I will run new Drive B as A and check temp. Am I having fun yet?

There's some folks who modded the case to add an external fan. I'd also make sure you have good airflow around the unit, by raising it up an inch or so if possible.

I added back the new Maxtor 80Gb as A. The temp with this singe drive stabilzed at "49C (normal)"

Bumping the fan to 12v and raising it on four upside down 20oz pop bottle caps dropped my temp almost 20 deg C.

If it is overheating and shutting down, either you did not plug in the fan or the fan died. Shutdown is at something like 85C (ask how I know) and even the hottest working units here are in the 60's (mine was 52-55 with the fan plugged in).

So I've redone everything, and raised the unit up. This is in a cabinet with a Denon AVR 4802(It's like a toaster). I have to keep the door open. The system has now stabilized at 51C. Is this an acceptable temp? Also, did you bump the existing fan to twelve (I assume that you tap into hard drive cable power)? Or did you get a new fan at existing dimensions and replace?

Your 51 degrees is pretty standard for the environment you have. You should be fine. (Unless you have really hot summers :( )

Take your top (cover) off and leave it off. That's what I did. Mine is in a cabinet, however, and was running 61c with the factory drive. It runs at 50-51 now.
