Divorce, I got the Tivo
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: edde327
After 27 years of marriage: she got the house, car and everything else. I got the Tivo. I moved back into the city, everything in walking distance and short mass transit ride to work.
Something wrong with idea of marriage, you can only fail or die. Freedom is just another word to anybody married.

did you check into the Drake for a week or something? :)
i used to live in Rogers Park. i miss that place. i was right next door to the Heartland Cafe, near the water. ugh. i need to get the heck out of d.c.

I never thought a response would come from somebody else from Chicago. When the weather warm up, I plan to spend alot of time at Oak Street Beach.
People don't live by TV alone, that's why there is Tivo.

Glad to see you're not bitter! ;)

Man, I always wanted to stay at the Drake one time. Too expensive for my budget though.
I did manage to find a great deal at the Palmer House Hilton once though.
I LOVE Chicago! I'd probably move there if the wife would let me.
I can't go your route (Divorce) though, I got me a good one!

One of the funnier quotes I've read in a while.
Chicago is great for being single. Fantastic bar scene, tons of outdoor activities. I moved into the city with the intention of dating nearly every one of the 1+ million women and met my wife two weeks later.
Enjoy the single life!

Hey, I live in the Chicago area, too! Maybe we should get a TiVo cookout together! Why should CA and TX have all the fun? Sallypnut could be our featured entertainer!

Well, I had around 26 years of marriage experience, all be it to 3 different wives ;)
Your parting shot doesn't exactly work for me though. Perhaps it's just reflective of your current state. There were absolute highs, and lows in each of my 3 marriages, and in my current 2 year relationship. I'd rather focus on those, than what it's called.
I wish for you some new highs. Maybe the TiVo will be date bait?
Rob
P.S. Look at it this way, after 27 years you ended up at the same place many of us have, but you only had to go through one divorce? :D

I'd go. My wife will think I'm nuts though...

It is great to hear good things about Chicago. It is a fun city with good night life. I live about 4 blocks from the Original Mother's bar. I am a five minute cab ride from Jeno's East (deep dish pizza) and hot dog stands all over the place.
I am sorry if my thoughts on marriage bothered anybody. It was just a little fun on life. A little humor on a bad situation.
I did not check into the Drake, went to southeast Florida for a week instead. It was cold in Chicago for the first week in April. Snow flurries and the like. The week helped get my head on straight, besides I got a tan.
I think getting together is a great idea. Nothing like Lincoln Park for some fun. Zoo for the kids, allot parking.

She already KNOWS you're nuts... you emailed the pager-watch of someone you don't even know! :D

Yeah, but I didn't TELL her I did that...

I haven't been to Chi-town in a couple of years now. It wouldn't take much of and excuse to get me back.
I'd be in if it is at all possible!

Me too.
After my divorce in 1995, she got the 35" TV and the laserdisc player. I didn't rent a single video. Spent a lot of time at Webster Place and 600 North Michigan though, sneaking in to double features. Back then, Laserdiscs were to video rentals as Tivo is to watching Live TV...I just don't go there.

I'm in for a Chicago meet!
Living in Downtown Chicago is nice, you can walk to most anything. I work in the loop and walk home everyday. Except today :) I did not bring a jacket to work, and it's a little to cool to walk home, so I guess a cab it is!

Don't start telling people about our wonderful weather....70 yesterday, 45 today, 85 a few weeks ago, 40 the next day...it's all just too sad and depressing.

OK, now I'm envious! There is something about Chicago deep-dish pizza that I've never been able to find anywhere else. I lived in Evanston a couple of years as a kid, and there was an awesome pizzaria there that I still fondly remember the spinach-stuffed pizza, 20 years later. Even the thin pizza we got from (I think it was named) Gigio's (?)
*sigh* I want Chicago-style thin & stuffed pizza here in Sacramento. Forgot those stupid ponies!
[edit]
P.S. If my wife left me, she'd take the TiVo! Even though she did not see the need for one when I bought it, she'd never let it out of her grasp now :D

Forget about the deep dish...try Brick's Pizza on Lincoln Avenue...best gourmet thin crust pizza ANYWHERE.

Yep, Gigio's is correct. Is the other place you're thinking of Carmen's? They're a couple blocks away from Gigio's, and they do make delicious stuffed pizzas.
I went to Northwestern from 1992-96, so I know that part of Evanston like the back of my hand. Darn it, now I'm hungry for Chicago-style pizza. Oh, well, I'll be back there in two weeks.

I never tried them but I know other people like them:
Lou Malnatis
They deliver all over the country. I know what Pizza is like outside of Chicago. I think it might be worth a shot.

<drool>O o o o h! Lou's pizza! Yum.</drool>
Also, Lou's has some of the best clam chowder in the Midwest. Even my New England friends agree.

I'll be passing through O'Hare in about a month on my way to Las Vegas, and will have about an hour and 20 min. layover. (I haven't flown since 9/11, and I'm not sure how much of that will be taken up with security bullcrap, so...) Is there a good pizza place in O'Hare where I can sample the local specialty? I've heard about it for years, and would love to try some.

You'll find Pizzeria Uno at O'Hare. Deep dish pizza.
Here is a link listing all the restaurants/bars and their location within O'Hare.

I'm in- bring on the cookout!
I would gladly volunteer my services as featured entertainer too- I could see if my songwriter pals could help me whip up a Tivo-inspired tune. Of course, you might find yourself wishing for 30 second skip. :)
By the way, I used to work at Carmen's pizza...mmmm...spinach stuffed slice...mmmm...

i was always partial to Giordanos. that pineapple pizza sent us up the bomb.

I remember in college when I thought that Papa John's had some good pizza.
When I moved to the Chicago area, boy was I mistaken!

I'm hungry. Will someone in Chicago send me some good ribs and a Blues Brother CD to listen to while I eat? Thanks!
Posted by: AlanShutko
VitaMan, just order some from http://www.ginoseast.com ... not the fresh experience, but better than nothing!
As for other pizza types... if I want thin crust, I live on Long Island. Pizza is one of the things this area does right. Nothing approaching good deep dish, though. We have a Pizzaria Uno here and it's just as bad as all the other ones in the chain I've been too. 8^(
