Release 2, version 3, and USB Ethernet

I've got a brand spankin' new TiVo box (direct from TiVo!) and a brand spankin' new USB ethernet adapter from LinkSys. I plug the adapter into my TiVo, plug my DHCP enabled network into the adapter, and turn on the TiVo. I get no link lights on the adapter. I get no link lights on my hub. I'm asked for a phone number and enter ,#401, into the dial prefix and try to continue with the setup, but I get kicked out, the system telling me I have no dial tone (which, of course, I don't).
I read that you can use the ,#401, dial prefix to get the TiVo to use the internet for you DAILY updates. Does this mean you cannot use it for the initial setup!? I have no phone and don't want to cart this thing to a friend who does if there's any way to avoid it. Any help?

are you sure it has version 3? Series 2 boxes come with 2.1 don't they?

Are you certain you are running version 3.0? If it was just shipped to you, I would think that you are running 2.0.3. Mine gets the IP address upon start up, not when your go to dial.

As others have stated above the Series 2 units ship with 2.0.3. Since the USB ports aren't even active until you get 3.0, you'll have to complete the setup using the phone line, then wait for the 3.0 upgrade to be downloaded and installed before it will dial out over the network.

Doh! Well that would explain things. So if I plug this into a friend's phone, will I get 3.0 or is it not being distributed yet?

Get in line... The "end" of v3.0 upgrade line is wayy down there....
Posted by: skia
I don't understand what that means.

3.0 is being slowly released. The floodgates have not been opened. It will essentially trickle out to users, based on their service IDs.

Will there ever be a time when it will not be trickled out? Will the "floodgates" ever be, in essence, opened?
Here is my concern: I don't have a service ID, or, if I do, it's a very new one. I'll be in the queue to get the update forever if I have to cart this to my friend's place once every two weeks and let it dial in.
Will there be a time when 3.0 will be in general distribution? Is there any other way to upgrade the software other than via phone?

No other way to upgrade the sofware, but TiVo will open the "floodgates" as soon as they are certain that there are no major bugs or compatibility issues with the release.
A few months, maybe...

Eventaully, but no one knows for sure when. Durring the 2.5.1 update it took 2-3 for everyone to get the upgraded. 3.0 only started being releases 3-4 weeks ago, and they have more customers now, so it may be a while.

Considering all the flak the Series 2's have been taking for less-than-stellar video quality (which is supposedly improved in 3.0), I would hope they expedite the upgrade process a little before the Series 2's start getting a bad reputation.

I agree that it would be nice to have my Series2 upgraded ASAP. I'm curious if there's a way to dial-in to TiVo in which an upgrade is "forced"? Sorta like ,#401 for the USB-ethernet, but a little different, ya know? I'm sure if there is, TiVo isn't about to tell everyone about it ... just wishful thinking on my part, I guess.

No, there is no way to do it (believe me, if there were the Underground would have found it). It all depends on your machine's serial number. TiVo picks X number of serial numbers each day/week to download the release to. Then when those machines call in the new code is downloaded.

As I said above it all goes by your serial number. The fact that you just bought your machine does not give you a better or worse chance of getting it. There have been rumors that TiVo is favoring Series 2 machines, so maybe you will get it sooner rather than later.

Check out RobD's message in this thread, in which he reports that he was told that the 3.0 upgrades have been halted for now due to them finding a bug.
