Learnig IR codes

As the Tivo has a IR detector on the front panel PCB (Sharp ISU60 or similar), why not add some code to allow the learning of non standard codes from set top boxes. so the can control these boxes.
Writing of code would not be hard to implement as harware is there and probably most code.
