One Pre-Upgrade Question
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm taking care of the upgrades for a friend. So, I ordered the 2 series 2 Tivos and two 80gb hard drives.
All arrived and I'm ready to go. The question is, since these aren't my Tivos and they were shipped directly to me, they haven't signed up for the service yet. These Tivos have not been plugged at all.
The question: is it necessary to establish service before I back up. I'm going to use mfs tools and do it via hindsdales FAQ.
Please advise as to the best route.

The backups are smaller when the units are setup.
Also please check to make sure the units are in working order, use them for a couple of hours (or days better).
You do start the free preview period that lasts only around 4 days, plus 12 days of guide data.

2nd that thought. It would be nice to know the units worked before cracking the cases.

I also plan to upgrade my Series 2 60gb tivo. When reading the faq's can I follow the steps for the single drive stand alone Tivo? I was told the series 2 box already has a bracket for the 2nd drive - but will the software from the faq work the same way with the series 2?
Btw - anyone use the Maxtor 160GB drives yet? I see them listed on PTV Upgrade - wondering how loud they are etc...

Personally, I'd wait until the 90 free replacement warantee period is up, but I tend to be paranoid.
