Refurbished Sony SVR-2000 Upgrade Experience

For the archives...

I recently bought a refurbished SVR-2000 from a Sony Outlet. After letting it hum for a couple of days, I decided to carefully void the warranty and try replacing the A drive with a Maxtor 80GB.

Since the original drive has 13 partitions, I obtained an 11-partition image, restored it to the new drive, tested it, ran TiVoMAD, and tested again. Unfortunately, the capacity did not increase.

A search here turned up a reply which stated that it might be necessary to use a TiVo with an older PROM version in order to perform the expansion. Fortunately, I also have a Philips 212. So I restored the backup and ran TiVoMAD again, just to be safe, installed it in the Philips and it worked. Naturally, I had to use the Sony remote to operate the Philips unit in this state.

I put the new drive back in the Sony, half expecting it to revert back to the original size again just for spite. I got even more skeptical when it rebooted itself once (like what happens upon first boot after TiVoMAD), but I was proven wrong. System Information now shows 91 hours at Basic.

If I hadn't had access to another TiVo, I guess my only alternative would be to add the 80GB as a B drive, but I didn't really want to do that.

Hope it helps someone.

I too have a refurb'ed Sony SVR-2000. I just restored the 11-partition image (2.5) to my 120GB and ran TivoMAD and still have 30 hrs @ basic. So, does anyone have any ideas how I can resolve this issue?

Hmm, I am in desperate need of an image for this unit, but I guess I'll wait and see what happens on this thread before jumping any further. (not that I've managed to obtain one anyhow... :-\ )

do a search on how tro disable initrd in the underground forum. you don't need to muck w/ your PROM, just disable the initrd in the kernel.

Weel the unit I have came with a 13 Partition 2.5.1, I purchased a new 120Gb drive and imaged with a 2.0.1 software reinstalled it and have had no problems.
38hrs 55mins best
63 hrs 5 mins High
83hrs 33mins Medium
141hrs 17 mins Basic

I just followed the "hinsdale how to"

But my software has now been upgraded to 2.5.1a, and will be making an image this weekend for safety before I start playing with turbo net and the PAL mod.

I'll try the 2.0.1 image next to see if there is any difference. I used 2.5.1.

I had to use the TivoFlash utility and kill-initrd to get my rc.sysinit from getting restored to the original version.

I thought you were wrong but it all makes sense. I thought I had already done the kill_initrd but that was on another drive. The fact that SquirrelyM's issues were resolved by booting up the first time after TivoMAD in a non-sony makes perfect sense. I feel like a fool. Now if I could get my Tivo to Power On with my TurboNET card installed I could get that working too :(
