i need an opinion

i am going to get my parents a TiVo in the next month. i am torn on whether to buy them a series 2 or a series 1. here is the situation. they live quite far away, so i want something that i wont need to hack, so if there are any service issues, they aren't stuck. a 60 hour unit ought to do the trick for them. i currently have a series 1 sa. i have not seen the series 2 yet, how does it compare with the series 1 in ease-of-use? thoughts, opinions are greatly appreciated, thanks.....

The software is basiclly the same for both units, so "ease-of-use" will be the same no matter which unit you buy.
I'd recommend getting a Series 2 unit. It has more space, and will be more future proof when TiVo starts offering additonal services. (i.e. streaming radio, VOD, video sharing, etc...)

I agree, get a series 2, new technology, with this kind of technology when buy old you do not really save money.

Until the Series 2 PQ issue is conclusively resolved I'd wait. Hopefully it will become a nonissue with ver. 3.0.

The Series 2 picture quality issues ARE fixed in 3.0, so don't worry about it. (check the sig :))

Did you see a difference originally between Series 2 and Series 1? Did Ver. 3.0 reduce or eliminate that difference? Are we certain that some PQ issues being reported don't stem from individual differences between identical TiVo models?

This is the link to the second to last page of the long thread about Series 2 PQ. (The last page has three short posts which don't add much):

Without further corroberation I don't agree that Series 2 PQ is a resolved issue. It appears to be an open issue.

This corroberates Dan's assurances. Anybody else?
Perhaps this issue is now resolved!

Yes, the PQ is much better with 3.0.

We didn't know that for Series one either. I had two issues that were shared by just a few other people. Bad batch (I tried several from the same store)? Environmental issues? My particular sensibilities?
Anyway, the first problem went away when I switched from cable to dish, and the second went away when I switched from high to medium for most of my recordings. (That's right, in my case downward was better for this particular annoyance.)
I think these are issues in the SII PQ thread too because some of the descriptions of PQ issues seem contradictory.

ALL your TiVo's have been upgraded? I guess you do get some perks for being a moderator after all... :)

I will add my vote that Picture Quality w/Series 2 and v3.0 is quite excellent. I am totally thrilled by this development from variable picture quality just 1-week ago.
TiVO is JUST as good as cable direct via splitter. There are a couple weak channels...but they are weak in BOTH configurations...TiVO cannot produce somethin from nuthin...
I needed to tweak my TV's settings after the 2.0.3->3.0 upgrade (to remove grainy-ness via sharpness setting reduction). Also, I have a fresh set of cable ends from the pole to my TiVo by my cable guy during a digital cable upgrade. Picture Q is now PERFECT.
I was a just bit concerned about PQ on the digital side...compressing a compressed signal, but PQ there is perfect too...
No grains,
No artifacts,
No "snow"
No shadows
Ahhh...things are quite good here...
