Phillips Drives in a Sony T60

Does anyone know if I can take the two drives from my Phillips DSR6000R and just place them in a Sony T60?
My DSR6000 died and I'm pretty sure it is not the drives. It seems like a power supply issue. Obviously Phillips won't look at it since it has been modified (talked to them last night) and I'm not sure if I can find someone to fix the DSR6000.
I also can't find anyone who will sell me a new DSR6000 as an existing subscriber (which I think is a bunch of crap, but that's a side issue). And I'm considering buying a Sony T60.
Is the Sony T60 more reliable than the Phillips DSR6000?
Thanks.

Dennis-
I don't think that you can just swap the drives from one unit (the broken DSR6000) to a different unit (new SAT-T60), but I am not sure. I have read that the units, although have different manufacturer's labels on the outsides of the boxes, the internal workings are the same for all three (Sony, Philips, and Hughes) I think that your best bet would be to remove the drives from the DSR6000 (provided that you cannot find anyone to help you replace/repair the power supply) and install them in the T-60 you are considering purchasing. You would probably have to restore a T-60 image to the drives, but if you follow Hinsdale's directions, that should be no problem.
I agree with you on the issue of finding no one to sell you a new unit unless you are a new subscriber. I have been trying to get a second DTivo for quite a while, and it is frustrating.
With regards to the reliability question, I don't think that one unit would be more reliable than another. I have a Sony SAT-T60 that I purchased in January of 2001, and it has not given me any trouble (said while knocking on wood)
Best of luck.

Swapping the drives would qualify you as a Moron (see the Hack FAQ). Essentially, the system software is customized slightly differently for the Philips and Sony units. It would cause problems as your machine would keep downloading the newest software at every daily call, try to install it and fail, over and over again until TiVo has to intervene.

I simply asked a question. If you want to be a jerk, then keep your comments to yourself. If you did not include that first sentence then your comments may be considered constructive rather than condescending or inflamatory.

The Moron thing is not an insult, it's an unnofficial term. Sorry if it came off as an insult, it was meant more to be a cautionary thing. Teaches me for answering questions before I've finished my coffee. :)

2.28. Why are people in the Underground calling me a MORON?
This refers to two posts made by Richard Bullwinkle (a TiVo Representative) in the Tivo Underground hacking forum at http://www.tivocommunity.com .
A Type I Moron is someone who takes a box that came with some version of software (1.3, for example), and restores a backup of an earlier version of software (1.21, for example). The result of this is that the box will not upgrade itself to the latest version of software, without TiVo manually intervening and forcing it. However, some people did this and caused TiVo a lot of confusion trying to figure out why the boxes had 1.21 on them in the first place. See http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/Arc...2-6-000906.html for more details.
A Type II Moron is someone who takes a drive from a Philips unit and uses the image or the drive itself in a Sony unit, or vice-versa. While this will appear to work at first, what will happen is that the TiVo servers will see that the software version is incorrect, and try to update the unit. However the update will fail due to differences between the two units. Thus, every daily call will try an update, thus costing TiVo a lot for the phone calls, and eventually disabling your service to make it stop. They cannot fix this remotely by forcing it to upgrade or anything, so just don't do it. See http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/Arc...2-6-001799.html for more details.

OK. But you are right, you should have qualified that in the original post.
BTW, I tried to find a link the the Hack FAQ after your first post but couldn't, shouldn't that be a sticky subject in the TiVo Upgrade Center Forum?

It's http://www.tivofaq.com/hack/
A lot of the more specific technical details are outdated, though.

Anyone who scans these forums knows that stormsweeper is a "righteous dude", most helpful & knowledgeable. Don't take what he said as offensive. The term just refers to practices by some that sort of jeopardize whats practiced by people in these forums, as explained in the FAQ's stormsweeper referenced. It's good that you asked before you went ahead & did it.

I wanted to ask the "dumb" question-
I posted a question about restoring a backup of an older version of the Tivo software, which would place me into the category of a Type I Moron.
As it turns out, I will be able to make a new backup of my existing drive. What would happen if I installed the backup (rev 2.5), and months from now, when the software is at rev 3.3, (for example), the drive crashes, and I am forced to restore this outdated backup?

The Type I thing only really applies if you install a version older than it originally came with.
And thanks for the "righteous dude" comment, bidger. :) Makes me feel like I'm in a Bill & Ted movie.
I try my best not to sound rude, except when it comes to service theft.
